Thunderbird Club

I just want either different brand tubes on either side like expensive gold lions vs cheap Chinese ones which break up earlier....or more distinct, would be totally different tubes....like the gold lion kt88s in my jcm 800 vs el34s which the jcm 800 came with stock. Both channels are completely seperate from each other. I have a jmp1 pre amp

I have Marshall 9100 and 9200.

Two preamp tubes an two power tubes per 50w side vs 4 power tubes per 100w side... I don’t think there is enough room for kt88s but probably kt66s.

I want to try sylvania pre amp tubes which apparently test at 110 percent gain and above...another EVH thing.... and maybe mullard tubes for the other side.

Also have some nice speaker options to choose from...vintage 30s, greenbacks, g1265s...like rola ones.

I just figure why choose.... dual channel mod and have both.

Have you looked in the TB amp forum?
There are lots of amp forums around the net. I highly recommend AX84. While it started as a small single-ended amp project, it's gathered some great tube amp builders, modders, etc. There's a lot of posts about just such subjects.
Also, if you can find a decent usenet archive, poke around in alt.guitar.amps .

There's a lot of 'futbol' in FL. Mostly played and followed by younger folks and people from other countries where it's the most popular sport. I had a minor but significant injury in junior high playing soccer which has colored my opinion of the game.:blackeye: (it wasn't my eye)

I like this kind of Footy - Rugby League (a 13 aside version of Rugby) - which is even played in Florida.

My team is now called the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL (National Rugby League) in Australia. They were once very successful winning the competition the 11 years in a row between 1956-1966, and they wear a white jersey with a big Red Vee. :D

I agree, the late 60's (Gen2) T-bird is it's own design. A few 'mirror image' Gen1 T-birds (I never liked calling them 'reversed' because they came first) have been made - they look odd. Another reason the Gen1 should not be called 'reversed'. (and I know why they are called reversed...)

And I don’t get why Fender complained about the original shape which IMO doesn’t look like any Fender; causing Gibson to release the NR which actually is a little bit similar. (Gibson’s nyah nyah at Fender?)

I haven't even thought abut usenet in more than 2 decades. Back in the 90s it was already getting difficult to find publicly accessible archives; although there were providers that would provide access for a fee.

I started the steel string experiment after Xmas and ProSteels are the first that I put on. I'll keep playing them for a while to see how string performs over its life. RS66 is probably the next up.
Ah, cool. I don't think you'll find the RS66 scooped at all. It's really too bad that La Bella is discontinuing the SS series. They're so nice.

Are there actually any rules in Australian Rules Rugby?:smug: (Avatar explained)

I too agree that the Roto's aren't scooped at all, very nice mids to them, open and grindy. Just to bad i kill em in no time at all.
But for some reason, These Dunlop SS SuperBrights i'm using are holding up quite well.

Gibson discontinued the original TBird due to lack of sales...and probably because of the high degree of labor needed compared to a glued in neck, thin bodied NR. Also less and cheaper mahogany necessary.

The NR would have been more of a threat to Fender than the original if they'd made it bolt on. They didn't take that obvious next step until the Grabber, hedging their bets with the Ripper. Stupid move from a marketing standpoint but wouldn't have been Gibson without that decision...IMO.

Far too much is made of Fender's supposed displeasure with the original TBird. They were selling everything they could make, and more. No lawsuit was filed or threatened. But it's on the INTERNET so it must be true.

So, as of today, my Thunderbird collection will be complete. Gotta wait for 2 shipments later today, and I'll post a pic of the complete family. Couple notes:

I grabbed a 2015 TB in my attempt to collect all the weird one-offs in Thunderbird history. I like it! I even used it on a couple of tracks over the weekend when recording part of our band's EP, and it sounded great. Granted, studio magic can make the bass sound however it wants, but I'd say it's one of the first times that the bass had such a presence in our recorded work.

I'll end up with 5 'Birds when all is said and done, and I want to convert one of them into BEAD tuning. Help me decide which one! Here's the list:

50th Anniversary TB in gold
2015 Gibson TB
1976 Bicentennial TB
2011 Shorty bird
Epi TB VP

So, obviously the Shortbird would be difficult to convert to lower tuning, and I'd rather use it for me bass lesson bass anyway, and I plan on using the Epi for my primary gigging bass, but the others are fair game. Thoughts on which one I should choose? Thanks in advance!

I'd say the gold. It'll stand out, anyway. Make it in yo face.
