The good news is a great performance of a great song is really hard to mess up, no matter how much or little the gear costs. My favorite drum recordings I’ve ever done (with one exception) have all been on the best drummers. The one exception happened to be in a room I absolutely love for rock drums and the drummer was very well rehearsed on the material we recorded.
I just listened to a shootout of about 15 mics on a solo jazz upright bass player. The mics used ranged from an RE-20 at the low end ($500), to mics costing over $10k (AKG C24, Neumann U47). At least 6-8 of em were AEA mics. Sadly, when I did a blind listening test, my absolute favorites were the C24 and the AEA KU4 ($12k+ and $5k, respectively). BUT, every mic sounded good, because it was a great player in a great sounding room with a seriously nice upright bass.
