Thunderbird Club

I checked our vendor file Carlo, we do. I'm not familiar with them though. If you need something I'm happy to look into it for you.
Thanks, Mark, just curious. The company was founded in a garage in Oakland in the 80s. Adam bought out his partner Ben in the late 90s, then moved it to Iowa around the turn of the Century. Still all made in USA but now a lot of commercial and contract stuff. Last time I saw him he was loving not being in Oakland. As he said, "It's nice not having your employees doing drugs in the bathroom."

Know what you mean. Even if I had the dosh, I would still try to find the item at a lower price ... and I like recycling kit.

Agreed! I had a nice chat with my first studio partner, who’s a brilliant engineer. I asked him for recommendations on a good LDC. All his recommendations started at $3k. Back to researching for myself

And look the part doing it.

My proclivity toward ribbon mics started as an ornery streak, and then blossomed from there because I found out how good they could sound.

I always thought good ribbon mics have the most realistic soundstage. Or at least for what I want to hear. Tested the 3 ribbons I have on a male and female singer today. Came down to Stager SR-3 ($1,500) vs AEA R84 ($1,100). He couldn’t choose a winner, as they sounded pretty much the same to him. I thought the Stager tamed the nasal qualities of his voice and sounded a bit more open, so we went with that. I was splitting hairs to make the choice.
On the female, I already knew I didn’t absolutely love the R84, so it was Stager ($1,500) and am Avantone CR14 ($260). She has a very smooth, polite
voice, but loves the vocal sounds from the 1930’s and 1940’s. The CR14 has somewhat aggressive and maybe a bit ‘smeared’ mids, which worked perfectly for her. So in one instance, a dirt cheap, made in China mic won the contest and we got a great vocal from her.
My Cloudlifters just came in, so round two is about to begin :)

Love to hear a track.

Exciting times in the Talkbass Thunderbird and Ribbon Microphone Club.

I know, I’m sorry! I assume every musician is interested in how to record their music, which I know ain’t true. I’ll back it down.

*except to say Cloudlifter Z is insanely good. Night and day results.

no, don't stop...i know mics from a tech standpoint but reading about their usage at the pro level gives GREAT insight...please carry on...

Rainier is NOT a dormant volcano. It's not particularly active these days, but it's officially not dead. When it goes pop, it's going to make a bit of a mess around here. The chances of it happening soon are about, uh, I dunno. Not gonna worry about it.

Sounds like 50/50 odds; either it blows or it doesn't. So, each day without it blowing are a gift.

Ahem.

Yeah, wouldn't know a thing about mountains here.

I have a habit of moving to a new part of the country every five years. These photos are NOT helping me reign in my wanderlust...:woot:

Yeah, some of us don't need a record of our talentless bashing on a poor unsuspecting bird.
