Thunderbird Club

The original crack happened around 75(?). That's when it went to a violin maker in N. Miami Beach. He grafted in a piece of mahogany with 'violin' glue. It's also when I lost the serial #. I kept playing it through 84+/- pretty regularly, alternating with my 66 EB-3. In '10 when I got with the current band(sort of), I went back to using the 'Bird exclusively. The crack was separating again, so I took it to the shop where they attempted to re-glue it. Unfortunately, the crack was deeper than we knew. It held for awhile, then one night, at home, with it sitting on a guitar stand, the headstock snapped off. I was in another room, heard a noise, and walked in to see it-next to the Kasino-hanging by the strings. I can't even describe my feeling at that moment. Start with numb and go from there. As I recall, I nearly barfed.
Anyway, it's been back in operation, stronger than ever, since 2016. I can't use it on tonight's gig-unless I wanna conk the drummer. This is the tightest spot we play. I'll try to get a pic, no promises. Ah, but tomorrow night, it's Bird time!
yeah i was confusing with the date of the original crack you talked about some time back...mine has a repaired (fairly shallow) crack. the head never came off....guess FL weather (hot, humid, AC on, AC off...) doesn't help things..

Yeah, and it prolly didn't help that I left it tuned even when I wasn't using it. I'm fairly certain the tension wasn't helping things. I should possibly de-tune the LPB25 since it's rarely used.<edit> Done.

Changes in humidity are a killer for wood. In general, if it's humid and stays humid or if it's dry and stays dry, you are better off.

I can't like this, but I can sure sympathize. I'm in the same situation unless an unknown rich uncle turns up.
I've jokingly said I'm waiting for the state to pick the right 6 #'s(I have the right 6, they keep picking the wrong 6)or the Prize Patrol to show up, but I have all the basses I need. "Want" is a different animal.

It's always in a "temp controlled" environment. I don't take it on outdoor gigs if it's high humidity-which is most of the time here.

This herd covers all my needs. As for wants... a Gibson 335, a 76 Tbird, and an Ampeg PF50-T and I'd call it done

Cool! Since I don't play guitar, I have no GAS for those. There is a keyboard I'd like to have but no real need for it and I'm good on amps and PA for the foreseeable future

I've got the herd at 8 basses, 8 guitars
As far as amps go, I finally ditched all the amps & cabs that I had just laying around collecting dust or were only for the road. We made the decision to stop touring/ playing out and become a studio only band, so that made the paring down MUCH easier and changed the scenario from a Sophie's Choice situation to a simple analysis of the various pup configs/ unique tones that I need for the studio and I was easily able to trim the fat from there

Of course, now the attention will turn to the acquisition of more studio gear, signal processing and effects, etc

I like the way a tug bar on the treble side looks. I don't use 'em. It's a shallow thing. Visuals!
funny you say that, playing with your thumb (I know ahem) was sooo taboo back when first starting out but with time I started to do it almost naturally...it sounds great on some stuff and gives the option to mute with the palm...for me it's always been downstrokes but have been practicing up and down strokes lately...challenging but a whole new world starts to open up..

Your thumb gets tired? ;)

That is a really cool thumbrest and fits really well with the bird. My white one had a plain black plastic thumbrest installed by a previous owner. I found it got in my way so removed it. Perhaps one day I will fill the two little holes it left.
Thanks. Yeah, nothing like having your thumb cramp up in the middle of a bass solo.
