Thunderbird Club

I still buy vinyl. Having a record player and a place to put records is a joy. So is the ritual of handling a record by its edges and label, cleaning it, and gently lowering the needle by hand. It's also a way to mark the passage of time. A record side is between 20 minutes and a half hour.

My son was indoctrinated into this, but he's in remission for now. When he's old, like me, maybe he will enjoy the zen of records. I know he's interested in vinyl, but he doesn't have a place for them or a turntable.
I still haven’t started the list of mine with value so the wife doesn’t just have them hauled away when I check out. Need to work on that.

Still buy CDs, rip them to flac format and put them in the cupboard.

A few years ago my 10+yr old audiophile CD player developed a tracking problem and after a year and numerous trips to the authorised repairer I gave in and decided to buy a new one. I went back to the bloke I bought the CD player off and his recommendation was not to bother with a CD transport and instead to replace it with a nice DAC and a streamer. Works for us. I still like to have the actual CD though.

Classical music is different, as the labels offer direct downloads in lossless format. There were some happy fun times trawling through catalogs...

My Denon, that I bought as my first CD player way back when, is currently out of operation.
I think it is just an issue with the door/cradle opening mechanism as similar happened about 15 years ago. :)

Anyway, I found an auth repairer, spoke to them and found out their opening times. Rocked over with Denon under my arm and the place was locked up. I was p’ed off a bit but hung around for a little while until it was obvious no one was coming that morning.
So, I’m back to square one - not real keen to go back there and not real keen to buy a new CD player.

Long way to say I’ll look at DAC now and see if it fits us.

1. How many FLACs can you get in the cupboard?

2. Audiophile CD player? I thought that real audiophiles turned up their high bit rate noses at 44.1kHz sample rates and 24 bits.

I have significantly decreased CD purchases since subscribing to streaming. The sound quality of streaming is very good - as good as CD (if you are a subscriber and thus get the high sample rate and bit depth). It has allowed me to be far more experimental in my listening and I have discovered artists that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. The monthly subscription fee is less than I would otherwise spend on CDs annually. However, I have eclectic tastes so there are still CDs I buy because they are not available streaming (or I worry that they won't always be).
I still buy cds of the new bands I want to support; directly from their websites. $10 to $15 here or there makes me feel like I’m helping them out. Most of my listening though is Spotify these days.

My 30 year old Sony carousel has developed a tracking issue. I now have to play my cds through the Blu-ray multi format player.

Taylor Swift was not available on any streaming platforms for quite some time. Now she is.

Or is it surprise/revulsion that I may know something about pop-tarts?

As much as I want to not like them, there are pop-tarts that have good songs. A discovery I made when I heard Dweezil Zappa's cover of the Britney Spears song Hit Me One More Time. I went back and discovered that Brittney has some good songs and is actually a really great singer. And that made me really listen to the Spice Girls (not as good, but individually a couple of great singers and a couple of good songs). Then I started listening to Katy Perry. Soon enough, I discovered Taylor Swift. So, I have a certain appreciation for some of the pop-tarts.

But I have no appreciation for any of the boy bands. Can't stand any of them.

You cats have got to stop with the Cobalts!!! I got rid of my sets because they didn't do anythign for me, but y'all are pushing me near the edge to try them again....
I’m liking them so far on the ‘15. It’s been a few weeks with them, although I’ve been on the road all week and haven’t played it since Sunday.

I've heard that before, but there's no one central place for that. Plus putting on an album for me is like an event, so it's all good as I do it. Even with the digital listening I do, like on my phone or via my phone at work, I still listen to albums 99% of the time. The only playlists I have are of single artist b-sides. Sugar, The Catherine Wheel, and The Auteurs. I never do any sort of shuffle.
Love those bands. Mid- 90s I was after that school, then got into Hüsker Du after discovering Sugar. Reinvented my early 80s punk fascination.

Not revulsion, just curious. I think Taylor Swift is a tremendous talent. She’s not in my rotation, but I get why she’s popular. She is certainly a good songwriter, even though I don’t relate to her point of view. My daughter grew up listening to her and she’s a voice for her generation.

Liner notes? I really like to know about the production of the album I'm listening to. Where it was recorded, who played on it, etc. You find out some really interesting things in those notes.
When I really get into an album, I’ll research it on the net while listening to it. There’s a ton of info out there about the recording sessions for a lot of classic albums.

Let's see, what did PD just say (at the top of smrtz[1] lungs, repeatedly)?
"A BUNCH OF PEOPLE I HAVE NEVER MET IN REAL LIFE ARE IMMATURE AND NARROW MINDED SO I SOLD MY BASS GUITAR TO TEACH THEM A LESSON."
Yeah, I think I see a problem there.

something I once heard is ringing my bel with this guy(?). Hanging on to anger is like drinking poison, wishing it will affect the other person. Sounds like this guy(?) drank the poison hoping to infect us, the smart t-bird loving peoples

There are DACs at all price points. Denon should have something, or Cambridge Audio (DAC Magic 100 ~$300). Time consuming ripping all your CDs though - took me a couple of months. Found iTunes was the best for ripping, then convert the files from Apple lossless to flac.

I don’t understand why but most TB Studio’s I’ve seen advertised (very few sample) seem to be heavier than the neck through TBs.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick on this ?
I'm certainly no expert, but I was surprised how light my Studio is. Mine is just over 9 lbs. I think I read somewhere that the Studio bodies and headstocks are slightly downsized compared to the "regular" Thunderbird IV.
