Thunderbird Club

Took the NR41 out to rehearsal again last night. Such a fantastic instrument.

Been selling a fully loaded licensed-by-Fneder rosewood P neck on fleabay. Had around 20 watchers and last night accepted an offer. A day later I was still waiting for payment and the arsehole messages me saying he doesn't want to spend that much, can he have even more knocked off the price? Neck relisted ... all watchers gone. And you wonder why I prefer cats to people?
You're inspiring me to keep a Cataldo build in my sights.

Enabler.

Curiosity is about to bite me - I'm trying to avoid getting bitten. Anybody ever use EMG pickups in a Thunderbird?
Lots of experience with EMG pups, unfortunately not in an all mahogany neck through build like a TBird. Mostly in maple, ash, alder and poplar body basses.

EMG pups come in many different flavors and both active and passive so there's really not a specific sound to them. All that said, when dropping a new set of aftermarket pickups in a bass, unless it's a set of geezer pups I really don't lean much towards EMG. I find bartolini pickups to be the aftermarket pup I most frequently go with.

Just my personal opinion, but on a TBird I'd probably lean towards TBird specific pups like Lollars or some of the other offerings mentioned around here. I don't know if it's been confirmed but I've read speculation here that the China Buckers are what Eppi is using in the VP. If that's true it's gotta be the best pup bang for the buck out there. If it's not true you could probably find a new Eppi embassy bass being parted out for $150 and end up with a nice set of VP pups plus a nice bridge and maybe tuners.

Good luck!

Still a little in the dark about this pre, the STC-3P. I've joined the forum at Seymour Duncan and posted my query...
It does look like a very unique design based on the specific requirements of the signature artist. Not exactly intuitive. Looks like the trim pots only effect the slap portion of the preamp. So as long as you leave the volume knob pushed in it appears the preamp will behave like a relatively normal 3 band preamp.

Last time I suggested scrapping an Eppi Embassy to use the parts for a Tbird project somebody freaked out:eek:
But yeah those pickups and bridge are great if you come across a donor.

Seems to have really helped. I saw him 2x after the crash (RCB) and looked odd but worked. The first time I saw it I was talking with Kim Davis (of Point Blank, opening act) beside the stage and Leon and the rest walked by and stopped to chat. I saw that and was thinking, "what's that crazy looking thing." At the time I didn't realize Leon "needed" it. Had it on a couple of TBirds, which was all he played at the time as I recall. Didn't look good but did what it needed to.

China Buckers are nice, I put a set in my Orville, they don't have what the Epi Vinatge Pro pickups have though, and neither is as good as a Lull pickup, way more depth there.

right idea but aesthetic design-wise...

Arseholes abound unfortunately.

I’m a bit leery of Gumtree too these days.

I finally decided that Diago strap locks looked like what I wanted. (They're one of the few that come with screws that might fit the Epi birds, too!) Apparently JHS bought them, and at least in the US they're as scarce as hens' teeth. StewMac, however, still had them (only in black, which was what I wanted). Or so they said. When I went to checkout, they are "no longer in stock and will not be restocked".
Thanks a lot. I was all set to buy a couple of other items, but with the $10 minimum S&H, decided to wait.
Since the 5 string came with those silly DiMarzio ClipLock connectors, I need something better.

Thunderbird Wee Hours Sunday...

Wacky!! A fender style upper horn on a Bird!

My go-to would either be a post-extended button or a flat hook like the Steinbergers had.
I don't think I have any pix handy, but I've routed a shallow channel into the back of a bass that travels toward and through the neck heel, and fastened into it a strip of heavy gauge steel, upon which I attached a strap button. The end of the steel strip was behind the neck at about the 12th fret. Worked like a charm.

Edited typo...

Mo' edit: you couldn't see it as it went up along the back of the neck. You could see the strap ending behind the neck somewhere, but I used a dark colored strap to downplay that odd aspect.
