You never really know what’s going on in people’s heads - except here where it’s obvious.
I’ve had drummers quit suddenly like that. Don’t take it personally and be thankful he didn’t waste MORE of your time

That's really sucks! But so on-brand. Good luck in your search. The one in your post is probably pretty good and reliable. I hear Roland's a good guy, too.

Can't live with um', can't shoot um'... drummer-in-a-stomp-box seems like a good temporary solution

I do my best to keep our drummer happy - it's my band but it's generally the bass-players job to keep the drummer sweet. (AKA; to assure a solid rhythm section) He can be difficult sometimes but as long as he stays focused on the job at hand - he's a keeper. That and we all hang well together - the most important part of the equation. At one point there was a chance he would quit and the rest of the band was ready to continue w/another drummer but nobody wanted that to happen cause we like him. Luckily he was just bitching and wasn't serious. (a bridge hopping issue) Traffic in the Bay Area has got to some of the worst in the country and so we are empathetic to that as he was the only person needing to do so at that point. Now we have 2 crossing the Bay Bridge so he's not alone. The things we do to keep it all together!

It's hilarious how long that this type of thing has gone on! We had a very similar version of it when we were kids in the early 60's. I think Mad and Cracked (magazine) had a lot to do with it - late 50's beatnik sick humor.

There's always a bright side - I'd rather a drummer up and walk away during practice than be a drama queen every time the band is together. Walking out on a gig is a different story, but it sounds like that wasn't the case, so again it could have been worse. Good luck with the new search.
I pity those that recognize differing types of crazy based on experience (with those exhibiting crazy).
Well, you can... But you will have limited gig opportunities for 25-life.
