Oh, yeah. Especially in the summer, we'd take off for hours. So long as we turned up when expected (or a friend's parent called, etc.), no problem. Up the street, blocks away at a playground, and y 8 or so, out roaming the desert.
It's one of the reasons we live outside cities, in non-HOA neighborhoods with big lots. So long as the kids aren't running out in front of cars or something, no one cares.
My daughter can't conceive of me during the summer leaving home at 9am, being home for dinner and leaving again until the street lights came on. She asks what we did outside all that time (already knowing that there were no cell phones or video games). All I can say is we played, rode bikes, and had fun.
What is more horrifying is that as parents, we live in fear of "the authorities". A complaint from a neighbourhood busybody (or an ex-spouse) to an aggressive child welfare agency can result in losing custody of children and a long court process to attempt to regain access/custody.
