How much of life is based on dares?

Most Japanese food appears to be based on dares. It appears that some portion of academic research is based on dares - I dare you to write a grant application for... I dare you to get your paper on...published...
There are lots of things that fall into that category. Turbine powered racing boats? Most public art? Heroic Victorian statues look like they were trying to sneak some soft core porn into the public square.

[edit] Autocorrect didn't like the obvious. Gosh.

It was all a function of the size of the radial engine and the shortest winds that would allow it to fly. Absolutely crazy.

<---Structural failure and crash.

gotta love this club!....that is one of the most used crash scenes in early Hollywood films....in reality the Model Z was an earlier Gee Bee and won the 1931 Thompson Cup flown by Lowell Bayles (beating Doolittle flying a 'Laird Super Solution" biplane) and later ate it in those speed trials...in all fairness to the builders (and genius designer Bob Hall) they upgraded the engine to a larger model (for the speed record) the frame was not really designed for but the crash is speculated to have happened because the fuel cap (which sits on top of the fuse) came loose at 314 mph, 50 feet off the ground hitting Bayles in the face, making him yank hard on the stick causing the wing to come off...
The later R1 had the fuel cap moved under a hatch....these planes coined the Super Sporter (SS) denomination later used by Chevy 60's muscle cars...

Pretty much the argument for tenure. But I still question the logic and sanity of funding and conducting raindrop research.
I don't, I call it progress. No, I don't need to get on an airplane and fly to San Diego today but the fact that teardrop shape studies have made this possible allows me to go lobster fishing in a few hours...:D

So query closer to the source. I mean, we can give you all sorts of answers, but they might inadvertently back the case for lack of sanity. Personally, I'm excited that we are finally researching the effects of atmospheric pressure on the acceleration and velocity of water-skinned, water-filled vehicles. This is the future of high-speed transportation, especially powered by electric motors.

The PinkBird is officially out for delivery. It should land sometime later today. Getting anything done at work will be a challenge.

I know that feeling!

Speaking of deliveries, I ordered a stuffed Slackwyrm on Aug 3. I got notice today that it had shipped. Looking at the tracking info, it left the factory on Jul 25 and left Honk Kong International Airport on July 31. Who says time travel isn't real?

(Yes, I know what it really means. Dragon lair, don't care.)

Well done. I certainly never made any money playing 80s pop.

Having had some time to mull this today while I was out paddling.* I have heard that the success of Stranger Things on Netflix has resulted in a resurgence in all things 80s.

* Paddling today because it is a holiday in Canada. It is known by various names including August Long Weekend, the Monday we get off in August, and oh I don't have to work today.

We just got back from a long weekend at Lake Champlain (relevant in that I was kayaking near Canada :roflmao:).

I have next Monday off because I work in the last state in the U.S. that celebrates VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day - Wikipedia).

When Stranger Things first came out a couple of years ago, it really did inspire me to revisit some of my favorite 80's things.
