That is exactly what my wifes friends have been asking. They know how this works. ;)
The purse thing actually worked for me for awhile. We have a friend who was an exec with a popular designer and hooked my wife up with a dozen or so bags at cost (the markup on those things is ridiculous). The friend changed jobs and moved away. The last time I pointed to the closet where some of them sit unused in the original boxes, my wife just gave me the look and said “and your point is?” We’re well past the point where what I’ve spent surpasses her purses.

Well I have to admit, when I'm playing funk that sounds like it's from a cheezy low budget 1970's porn movie, the first bass I reach for is my Jazz. Not only can I get all the nasal tones I want, but as you note it's capable of so much more - like bark and honk.:smug:;)

Seriously, I actually cut my teeth on a Jazz bass. This was my go to bass for well over a decade...

Even when I wandered from Fender Jazz basses I still made sure to get something that had at least one Jazz pup...

Which led to a bunch more of the same.

The journey isn't over yet, but I can honestly say for every single hour my "has been go to Jazz" is plugged in my Gibby's (birds and SGs) get hundreds of hours of amp time.

It took me a long time but I finally figured out I'm just a Humbucker kind of guy, single coils just don't excite me much these days, and generally speaking that to me is the significant difference between Gibson and Fender basses. Two very different approaches to making great bass guitar sounds. In the right hands either one is capable of creating bliss, in my hands it's a Gibby or similar Humbucker equipped bass. YMMV
wouldn't know...don't watch porn....:D;):roflmao:.....
beautiful collection....that said, this could not be further from the sounds you describe...

That's the problem with being married to a saint. Maybe. So long as I don't feel too guilty about it, there's not much downside to GAS, so long as it doesn't dent the budget. That said, I don't think there's any more bass guitars in my future. I'm shockingly happy with what I have now. Drum kits are a slightly different issue. I just picked up a 1970s Reuther stencil kit with concert toms and ratted out wrap. It looks bad, but the shells are round, and all the hardware except a couple bits I have replacements for is intact. So, it gets a rewrap and some cleanup, and it becomes the thumpy '70s and '80s sound drum kit up to a point. It's only got three toms, not a whole row of 'em. I couldn't deal with all those toms anyway.

There's a reason I never manage to finish projects in any kind of reasonable time. There's always another one that looks like it's gotta happen.
But drums take up so much space!

...which is why I did this :smug: and this ;), followed in the next paragraph by the word "seriously" and ended the post with "in the right hands either one is capable of creating bliss". Not trying to disagree with you but I can't make it any clearer.

I will say I'm a huge JPJ fan and love his sound regardless if he's playing a Jazz or a P bass or an Alembic. I can also say that when I covered that song I've done it on a Jazz with tapes, a P bass with flats, a Warwick Vampyre with tapes, and even a Gibson SG Supreme with flats. I personally like my SG sound on that song best, go figure. Again, I'm just a Humbucker kind of guy I guess.

recognize the car...is that Bird yours? Never seen it..

Yes, it's a '77 Greco Thunderbird II, that pickup is loud, raw, angry, rude, rock n roll simple, dime evrything - I love it!

My backup bass is a Squire VM Jag SS-P/J pups. Every once in awhile, I've tried turning on the J pup and fiddle with the tone. Nope. Not what I wanna hear. Same goes for the P/J on my EpiBird 5er. It adds nothing(for me), and actually reduces the output of the bass(es). I started playing on a Gibson EB3, using the 'Mudbucker', and that's the sound I like to work with as much as possible.

I love the Jaguar body style. Is it heavy? The guitarist in the thing I'm currently playing in plays a Squier Jaguar guitar. It's really nice. I'm playing a THUNDERBIRD.

The costs of my basses has far surpassed my wife's purse collection, and she doesn't buy cheap purses. She also doesn't buy some of the crazy priced purses her friends do. But then again I don't buy the super expensive basses (for the most part) that a few friends do. I have definitely outspent her in Thunderbirds VS purses tho. We won't discuss any of the other basses in the collection. Those prices don't count ;)

Where was I...…….Oh yeah.

Now days (since I discovered the TBird and SG) I'm in the exact same boat. A single coil P and a split coil P both have a sound I like (I still like a TBird or SG Humbucker better) but a Jazz pup near the bridge (with the exception the of a Warwick Thumb bass) is just not my cup of tea.

I have a SS Squire Jag as well and modded it with a custom built John East three stacked knob active preamp (Vol/Pan, neck bass/treb/brite, bridge bass/treb/brite) to see if I could warm up to the Jazz pup on that bass, but still no luck. The good news is, the split P on the Jag is quite nice so I pretty much leave it fully panned to the neck. I've thought about taking it back to passive and installing some Geezer pups in it, but I hate to mess with that sweet sounding stock split P.

The Fender Jag is a very nice and versatile bass, never owned one but have played a few in stores. The Squire Jaguar is Short Scale, built well, nice and light, not too neck heavy and dirt cheap new or used. It's a great platform for modding if you're into that, other than the anemic Jazz pup at the bridge it really doesn't need any modding, it's a solid player and perfect for gigging.

My daughter’s Jag SS is really light. It’s a decent instrument that I often bring as a backup because it fits easily into my truck’s lockbox.
I have a Squier Long scale Jag body and it’s heavy. Just depends what wood made its way to the factory.
