ya, totally agree, there really aren't many reasons to crank that thing to its limit as there is more than ample headroom.....keep in mind however, that unlike many amps rated over 200W, there is no output (DC sense) protection other than thermal.....part of the reason they sound soooo good....less clutter at the output makes for exceptional damping factor that brands (implementing speaker protection) can only wish for....

I know so little about amps so I guess I was lucky picking that one. To further illustrate what I was saying about levels - I have a Mesa M2000 650w and an SWR 400w, and to get the same volume level, they both (V) would only need be turned to 9:00. (gain a bit higher - about 11:00) So 1:00 (on the 550) has 0 - 1:00, more than double useful variance. Would probably a good studio amp in that respect.

@GBassNorth -- well you know George, there is an old saying 'laughter is the best medicine', although whoever came up with that had prolly never had a sucking chest wound.

Add that to your list of things you must remember not to do in future, without first engaging assistance. And remember never to do it in a kilt.

At least you can still play Thunderbirds while you recover.

Has anyone here tried the EB Cobalt Power Slinky Flats yet...

Pretty large gauge on the G, might be the ticket for my super magnetic 2015 bird pups.

Was messing around with the setup today and saw something I've never seen before. All strings perfectly in tune and intonated. Raised the neck pup height just a hair and it actually pulled the G string out of tune. I'm currently using a medium gauge string set, thinking a heavy gauge might do better on this bass.

Didn’t get to finish the thought, dang iPhone and clumsy fingers.

Anyway, congrats! I would love a ss bird. The refinish looks cool. I’m assuming it intonations even with the bottom wraps like that on the the saddles? I have no clue as to what those strings are...
Intonation is dead on

Looks Beautiful! Might just be me, but I think a burst looks great on a bird!

No idea on the strings (although I think I might have a bass with powder blue silks - I'll check) but I'd bet @SLaPiNFuNK would be able to help identify Short Scale Flats with baby blue silks and red/white/blue ball ends. Great guy, just changed locations and the name of his company but is a fantastic source for bass strings.
Great idea! Wish I'd thought of that first

Great find! Love the paint job. The ball ends of the strings tell me they're Rotosounds. Only string I've seen with those color silks are the nickel RS66. Not sure which these are, though, since you said they're flats.
Yup, definitely flats :)

The silks over the bridge on my IV didn't keep things from intonating, they just bugged me. I even got good sustain.
But, with the Supertone bridge, the sustain is even better. How much of that is the bridge itself vs just getting the silks off the saddles, I can't say. I can say that THUNDERBIRDs continue to impress me.

Cobalt flats + VP = Jazz machine. Who knew?

It's bizarre that the bass GP seems to think Birds are niche instruments. They seem capable of most anything. (Even flight, as demonstrated elsewhere.)

I'm guessing Steve Harris set.

Sorry - I don't know of any pictures of him playing a THUNDERBIRD

What?
I take some joy in posting this.

As much sustain as a `59 Les Paul?
