Thunderbird Club

JIO - l love the tunes! Great playing, very original twist on the surf sound and a very tight band, just as surf should be.

I really need to find a way to get my FrankenGoth THUNDERBIRD in your hands. Like I've said before, it's definitely a rock monster that goes from absolutely crisp piano clean, near baritone guitar territory to full on ground shaking bass at the twist of a knob. IIRC you're in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area. I get up there a few times a year, my next trip up maybe I'll bring the bass and drop it off with you as a long term loaner.

Thanks! :) We're definitely gelling as a band and are having a lot of fun in the process! It's the only 'surf' song we play, our set-list is like an iPhone music collection on scramble - all across the board. The connecting tissue is they are all good songs!
I'm in Pacifica, just south of SF and over an hour north of SC. It would be cool to meet you if and when - just let me know!

Perfect, I'll probably be up in Half Moon Bay area in the next few months, I'll ping you as our travel plans come a bit more into focus.

:bored:Well, best laid plans of mice and men I guess.

I was getting ready to contact the seller today, but needed to finish up a few chores around the house first. Was moving a heavy office chair down a flight of stairs and lost my footing. The chair and I made it all the way down the stairs to the floor but my foot got pretty mangled in the process.o_O

Needless to say, I won't be driving anywhere to pick up a bass anytime soon. No bones sticking out but I suspect something under all the swelling is either broken, torn or sprained. So I'm gonna pass on the purchase and just assume this bird has not chosen me. :(

Feel free to go for it if you're still interested.

Take care of your foot/ankle. Ankle injuries are the worst. If the swelling is not improving, go get an Xray. There can be broken bones that don't; hurt when you walk, but can be come long term problems.

Even the Daleks can manage stairs these days....

They can even manage a kilt. Although with a single toilet plunger for hands, I don't know how they put it on.

And with only a toilet plunger, I don't know how they can play a Thunderbird.

Dumb Loud Hollow Twang (97 - CD with Point Break) is probably the TBM's I listen most to. As the Dark Wave Swells (10) is a close 2nd. Sonic Bullets (01) and Intensity (99) are also good. Surf bands are a dime a dozen here on the left coast and yah, I know of and like all the classics - but what makes TBM's unique is their take on the genre. They did cool vids also. I have a collection of surf, but gravitate to TBM's more because they are much more than a surf band.

and if you like live - from As the Dark Wave Swells

Love it. Especially the Tejano edge on the second song. Thanks for introducing this. (Last night Had me playing surf style a while.)

Lousy photo, heavily edited as I waited too long into the evening to take it, but here's my personal star of the reggae show last night out on the deck in Newport. This little Birdie's a dub-reggae bomb. Hotter and punchy down low than my MIJ Fender P. A set of Cobalt Flats may be a tweak, but it's more present and more comfortable to play than the Fender, which up to now had been my mainstay...
Done.

Oh, man, Sorry to hear that. Hope it's whatever is the least serious.

Great stuff! Haven’t heard anything new from them in a long time. Always liked the bassist. She needs a Thunderbird....

Can’t like this at all. Hope it heals up well.

Lucked into this short scale beauty! The re-fin was due to the original owner having carved X's into the body (attempting to make it look like a Nikki Sixx model?) and then, later, attempting to sand them out. The guy I got it from had the top professionally sanded, prepped and finished in a beautiful silverburst by Noll Guitars in Cranston, RI. I can't get the camera to pick up the beautiful job they did on the re-fin. You'll just have to take my word for it :)
I really like the matching accent stripe that they did on the 'blade' of the headstock  The back of the bass was untouched in the re-fin process but has so damages, dings or even buckle rash. It's as clean as a whistle!

On a side note, does anyone happen to know what flats these are? I've found several that have light blue silks but none, that I saw, list the red white & blue ball ends.

Congrats

I'm appreciating the way Ashdown calibrated that amp - it needs higher gain and master V to be 'loud' but there's all that comes before that that is useable. Much more nuanced than my other amps regardless of wattage. I am careful with the JBL - the transformation replacing the stock Eminence was night and day. It made a very good sounding amp exceptional sounding - I was taken aback.
ya, totally agree, there really aren't many reasons to crank that thing to its limit as there is more than ample headroom.....keep in mind however, that unlike many amps rated over 200W, there is no output (DC sense) protection other than thermal.....part of the reason they sound soooo good....less clutter at the output makes for exceptional damping factor that brands (implementing speaker protection) can only wish for....

Didn’t get to finish the thought, dang iPhone and clumsy fingers.

Anyway, congrats! I would love a ss bird. The refinish looks cool. I’m assuming it intonations even with the bottom wraps like that on the the saddles? I have no clue as to what those strings are...
