Thunderbird Club

Thunderbird in the wild. Just been watching Vain in the UK. Great gig.

It's my '76 B-15 with upgraded late 60's JBL speaker. (sounds like Gods voice) I used the Ashdown 550 Spyder you repaired and it sounded/performed great! This was it's first full-through performance since I bought it 5 years ago! In this pic (1st song - instrumental) you can barely see a 1/2 filled glass of scotch I set on top of my amp head. :rollno: I should have known better as it vibrated off and broke on the stage mid-song. A expensive mistake as I only had a couple of sips of it. (Glenfiddich) It spilled on the grill cloth (which I installed in place of the stained original) so I broke it in last night as well! :)
....more expensive would have been if it spilled into the amp........too bad about that scotch...:bawl:..
really happy you're stoked with that 550....i would be careful with those JBLs...that head has some serious mustard.....seriously badazz tone machines.......got me this little toy to play around the house with yesterday....

Instead here's a recent recording we recently did of that instrumental - (Point Break by The Bambi Molesters - Croatian surf band) The Coral is featured.

UPDATE: replaced - hope this one works

I love good surf music! The Coral works great with this.
Little hints of Stevie Ray and Junior Brown in there.

OK, I went back and listened to the album this was on. Cool music, but the band definitely falls into the "get it technically correct in the studio" school rather than the "take some risks and run with it" school. And that's OK, but not my favorite. (An awful lot of my favorite albums are live.) They're also (like most surf bands) definitely into the FSOs. I'd love to hear your band do "Standing on the Nose in a Stylish Manner". In fact, I'd love to hear two versions- one with the Coral, and one with the mighty THUNDERBIRD.

I love the sound of that Coral. A lot! I know in a recorded and mixed setting some magic can be done on even no great sounding instruments, but I'm thinking that bass just sounds good. I love the fullness with some punch and crisp attack on top. Use a pick on that song?

Thanks! I play a combination of the bass part and the baritone guitar part as The Bambi Molesters have 2 guitarists. They are a great band that does interesting versions of surf and lounge music. A woman bass player also. (70's Jazz Bass)

Thanks! Yes, I use a hard pick and do a lot of palm muting. The bass sounds really good on it's own. :bassist:

Dumb Loud Hollow Twang (97 - CD with Point Break) is probably the TBM's I listen most to. As the Dark Wave Swells (10) is a close 2nd. Sonic Bullets (01) and Intensity (99) are also good. Surf bands are a dime a dozen here on the left coast and yah, I know of and like all the classics - but what makes TBM's unique is their take on the genre. They did cool vids also. I have a collection of surf, but gravitate to TBM's more because they are much more than a surf band.

Go get it! But if you decide to sell it down the line, gimme the first shot!
:bored:Well, best laid plans of mice and men I guess.

I was getting ready to contact the seller today, but needed to finish up a few chores around the house first. Was moving a heavy office chair down a flight of stairs and lost my footing. The chair and I made it all the way down the stairs to the floor but my foot got pretty mangled in the process.o_O

Needless to say, I won't be driving anywhere to pick up a bass anytime soon. No bones sticking out but I suspect something under all the swelling is either broken, torn or sprained. So I'm gonna pass on the purchase and just assume this bird has not chosen me. :(

Feel free to go for it if you're still interested.

I'm appreciating the way Ashdown calibrated that amp - it needs higher gain and master V to be 'loud' but there's all that comes before that that is useable. Much more nuanced than my other amps regardless of wattage. I am careful with the JBL - the transformation replacing the stock Eminence was night and day. It made a very good sounding amp exceptional sounding - I was taken aback.

Sorry to hear of your accident - hope it's only a bad bruise but it will take awhile to heal.

JIO - l love the tunes! Great playing, very original twist on the surf sound and a very tight band, just as surf should be.

I really need to find a way to get my FrankenGoth THUNDERBIRD in your hands. Like I've said before, it's definitely a rock monster that goes from absolutely crisp piano clean, near baritone guitar territory to full on ground shaking bass at the twist of a knob. IIRC you're in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area. I get up there a few times a year, my next trip up maybe I'll bring the bass and drop it off with you as a long term loaner.
