Yeah, back in the early 90s I got access to the internet by being a grad student (at 9600 bps!). The killer app was email; could directly contact professors, other students, administrators, etc. Could browse what little there was on the web with Lynx. Usenet could be odd.
I don't even know if there are any sources for usenet any more. I suppose the utility of usenet was usurped by specialized, web based message systems (such as talk bass) that appealed to narrower interests and were much better controlled and policed. As an example, in the sub-domain basses/thunderbird club, discussion could be (but doesn't have to be) limited to Thunderbirds and basses resembling Thunderbirds. Usenet must have had at least one Thunderbird related group (probably somewhere in the music.* domain)
