Thunderbird Club

found it!...E-mu Systems company picnic 1995...ripped it raw from the CD and slapped some L1 limit...
the transition from "Starship Trooper" into "South Side" happens at 5:58...the one from "South Side" into "All Good People" happens at 9:11...
Finally got a chance to sit down with headphones and listen - Nice!!!!

One common complaint I have seen for the Blood Moon is that when you engage the effect, the volume jumps up. I take it this is not a problem on the Thunderstorm?

Also, the Cattail demo sounds great. I can see using it quite a bit.
I have noticed no such problem. Also, in my brief trial of the Blood Moon, I noticed nothing. However, the nature of phasing will result in constructive and destructive interference (the nature of the phasing effect) that could create the perception of a volume change (up or down).

someone (either Miles or the Count) had mentioned doing a transition from "Starship" into "South Side" and I vaguely (been over 20 years) remembered something similar:wideyed: (what are the odds?) so I posted with the transition time...but I'll take the compliment!..:)

T'weren't me!

I've been using a cheapo set for about 25 years now!
Things to keep in mind:
  • Make sure the point where the string leaves the nut (at the end of the fingerboard is the highest point in the slot, so keep the file angled that way as you are filing.
  • Protect the peghead with some tape so you don't scratch it with a file.
  • Ideally the slot should be half the depth of the string diameter. A little deeper is ok, as long as the string doesn't get caught in the sides of the slot.
  • A lot of times the top edges of the nut are much too square for my liking, so I will round them off with the flat file in the needle file set, followed by a little 220/320 sandpaper
  • Polish the nut after you are done: 320/400/600 wet & dry, then some brasso on a rag. Just takes a few minutes and everyone likes a shiny nut. (Of course this won't work if the nut is made of really soft plastic, but then you should make a new nut out of something better. I use corian countertop samples)

My E string is pretty much completely submerged in the nut, it's that high...but thank you for these tips!

Since we seem to like the same sonic territory, I think you wold like the GHS Round Core Boomers. You have be very interested in the Fenders. I love the Round Cores on the VP at present, but am tempted to try the Fenders. I do have a set of Fender Pure Nickles. I'm not sure how much less top end they might have, but if they produce the big thick bottom like the RC Boomers, I may have another option! I don't think I have a old set of RC Boomers, but if I turn some up when I look later I'll sent them to you for a try.
Your too cool!

I lived in KY for nearly 35 years and loved the folks there. Down to earth, give you the shirt off their backs type people. Apparently they’ll even give you the strings off their bass too.

Thx for the Boomer offer but based on your reco a few pages back I already put some on order. I think I have my VP all sorted out but I plan on trying the boomers and a set of Cobalts on my 2015 Bird.

The 2015 has been a real puzzle to figure out. Possibly the most interactive and iterative set up I’ve ever run across. Every adjustment effects everything else. Just raising a pickup changed the intonation, go figure. I think I have it all sorted out now, just in time to start the perfect string quest for this Bird.

Yes.

I'm really nailing these questions this morning. I bet I get 100 on the 'Stuff That's Kinda Thunderbird Related' test next week! If not, I can't play in the talent show and that big talent scout is gonna be there! Then, my band will never get that recording deal :(

On a completely, 100% unrelated note.... does anyone have the tabs to Sunshine Day? I think they used a TBird in the studio....

Marsha!

Thanks! Well I looked and didn't find another set so my offer in somewhat hollow.

You might want to try them on the VP just for the heck of it. I didn't care for the RC Boomers on much anything else (not bad on a G&L L2000), but on the VP...Bingo! What a match. And I thought Cobalt Flats and Roto Flats sounded good on it.

The Thunderstorm may increase slightly in volume, but there's so much else going on I don't notice it. The Cattail needs to be rationed -- our set is 9 songs and it's used on two.

[Update:] What @PillO said about constructive and destructive interference.

So, what a difference!

The used set as cut for a 2x2, which i only managed to figure out after boiling.... i decided to just run the the E and A on it...uh, yeah...one of my new sets of cobalt flats are going on it once i get the nut cut...they sound GLORIOUS on it...

EDIT: I wonder if it is the hot pickups combined with the bright GHS (bright to me anyways) Pressurewounds is what I don't like...The Cobalts seem to always sound good regardless of the bass...
I have gotten away from Cobalt flats lately. You are reminding me why it's time to put a set back on a Thunderbird.
