I bought it new from Sweetwater.Love the stock strings but every time I play it my left hand fingers load up with black oil..guess it’s time to put some Rotosounds on it.

Anybody else experience this with new instruments?

My first thought was oxidized nickel from the stock strings. However, coming from Sweetwater, I am more inclined to believe that it is generic warehouse dust and dirt sitting on the fingerboard.

I have had new basses make my fingers dirty, but not like that.

One of the reasons that you get new instruments with nickel strings is because nickel is very slow to oxidize. And oxidation that does occur protects the metal below from further oxidation.

With an even distribution across the fingers, I'm inclined to believe dirt and grime. Perhaps partly from the manufacturer but also from the warehouse. If it were from the strings, I would expect the callouses to be very dirty and little elsewhere. Further, it would also be on your plucking fingers (perhaps it is and you didn't show any pictures).

As an experiment, take the strings off and clean/oil the fretboard. See how much grime comes off.

The 2001 is just.....different. I can't even put my finger on it but it just has something special to it. I experimented with changing the pickups once as a test because my friend had a set of the P Bass type split coil pickups he was going to sell. A few minutes of testing and my friend said he didn't know what I thought, but he felt the original pickups sounded better. I agreed. It is the bass I have bonded with the most out of all of the many I have owned.

Mine is burst and has a Babicz bridge and a Hipshot X-tender. Those are the only modifications. Both made me a little nervous, since I did not want to mess up the magic. Magic is intact. It now does everything I want it to do just a little better than anything else can. It makes me think that maybe there was something special about 2001.

I have never bought a new bass. The finger dirt on anything I end up with would be far more suspect than warehouse dust.

There's been a lot of speculation on what the black monolith was....

...But we Thunderbird owners know exactly what it was. Here it is opened up...

I have heard guitar players comment that 2001 was a great year for Gibson guitars, so maybe the stars just aligned right for them at that time?? Either way, I would not hesitate to buy another 2001 Bird in a heartbeat and hope that it contains the same mojo.
