Thunderbird Club

Falling Iguanas actually made the news on many channels in Canada.

[rant] because the news couldn't find anything to report about Canada!? Newfoundland storm, federal cabinet meeting, teacher strike, pipeline court challenges... No, frozen iguanas. No wonder we no longer trust the tv news.[/rant]
I stopped watching TV news years ago. If I’m going to find out about suffering, mayhem and stupidity, I’d rather read about it than see it.

Maybe they had to be removed from the website so that they could show them at NAMM. I never realized that the Epiphone website used live cameras to show the guitars and basses.
yeah, this is after they came back from lunch...

Out in genpop, @wintremute did his annual NAMM thing of providing us with an insane amount of photos on just bass gear. Such a generous thing to do! I have an irrational aversion to coffee table basses, so I’ll just focus on a few things that caught my eye.

Another failed attempt to cop a TBird vibe!

Maybe they saw the PG I made for @Mike.C. ?

He asked for a one piece full wing PG and I obliged. I love the way it transformed my(soon to be his) bass.
I hope he still loves it and rocks it!

No longer making PG's but it was a pleasure dealing with so many of you during that time and not so fun dealing with a select few. Total PITAes. :roflmao:

Happy Thunderbird Thursday everyone. I am glad the weekend is almost here. Rainy and gray is Spokane today, forecast for high 30s so hoping the glacier that developed in my driveway will continue to recede. Missing the sun I enjoyed during my brief time in Az. Here's a pic of the girls from last night.

An Ebony Studio 5 with different P/Ups or did you just change the covers and add rings? I like the PG too.

I've forgotten the guy's name that owned the Fiver, wasn't he from Wenatchee? That's a bad@$$ Bird!

On a bass related note: Could Gibson force Epi to not make VP's?

I can't imagine Epi discontinuing the VP - it's obviously a big seller and for a number of good reasons. Fender's Road Worn series is like that - regardless of some people not liking a faux distressed/relic'd bass, it has glowing player reviews and has continued to be made since its inception in 2009.

Edit: Regarding the VP and Fender RW J, if I didn't already own prime examples of T-birds and J's - I would purchase both. In general, it would take a lot for me to even consider buying a new bass - I've only owned two new basses in my entire life.

Well, Epiphone is 100% owned by Gibson, so yes, they could.

But I suspect that they won't. Doing a turnaround of the magnitude required in Gibson is a multi-year project. Anything that is working, you don't mess with in the initial phases. I think the big undertaking that is still ongoing is narrowing the price gulf between Epiphone and Gibson. We have seen movement in that direction with more budget friendly Gibsons. Expect part 2 to be more premium Epiphones so that it there is more price overlap between budget Gibson and premium Epiphone.
We’ll see about budget friendly Gibson’s. They tried a budget Firebird that was available in PB a couple years ago. It was like $499. The two I tried weren’t all that great.

I think we have seen the budget Gibsons - there are Gibson basses and guitars to be had in the $1k range now. I think part 2 is seeing Epiphones with premium features/colours/finishes that bring the price up above $2k. That gives overlap so that people can be eased from Epiphone to Gibson without sticker-shock.

JC Curleigh seems to have a big clue, even if he doesn't talk publicly much about Epiphone, at least in details. Anyone have a clue about sales numbers for brands and models? Gibson's privately owned, so it may not be publicly available...

Do these companies have an obligation to make their sales numbers public?

Nope. Private companies can generally keep all that stuff private if they wish. I think they'd want a solid reason (business, company culture / values, whatever) to release them. But one can argue for such reasons. Hence, my ask.

No obligation to publicly report information. There may be market research organizations that make some estimates by extrapolating from other data.

I got my Vintage Pro and wanted to post up here for TT but my son is home sick and I’m not finding time to give it a good cleaning (very dirty from previous owner) and photo before the sun goes down.
Either way, I’m really surprised how different it is in some ways compared to the CP I have, feels bigger not just in length but also body girth, similar if not slimmer neck than CP. I really like it, very comfy. Haven’t had much time plugged in.
Series parallel switch in the future. Also have to find the right hard shell case. Later.

I totally get this, I went through a 1.75" only phase, and recently have started to move into the 1.625" which makes it easier to go back and forth with 5s, and play some of the Hard Rock songs called for by my new band. That, and maybe my speed isn't what it once was. Interestingly, still don't get on with 1.5" necks, at least the one on my '66J

It's not easy, and I'll keep my ordered by me '59 NOS CS P for sentimental reasons.

Unlikely they're being discontinued, methinks. They were being displayed at NAMM.

When I saw the headstock of the white one in that photo, I started thinking they might be offering a specific color that would require me to have GAS and then actually do something about it. But, nope. It's white with purple/pink light on it. No Burgundy Mist Metallic from the factory.
