What if it is stunningly beautiful underneath the finish?

Schrödinger's mahogany...
Highly probable. But on the other hand, I think I have a buyer lined up and if it goes the way I'm hoping it'll leave me with enough money to then go buy an Epi Bird in tobacco burst that is also for sale here locally. So crossed fingers that it works out the way I have envisioned it in my head.

That being said, I'm sure something will go horribly sideways because that's how my luck tends to work.

Why not strip it and stain it? There are some beautiful results from that method.

I'm always scared of what's under there. My experience has been that solid color guitars/basses are solid color to hide flaws in the body wood and that stained ones tend to have a much higher quality wood used since they will be visible. I'd hate to "open it up" only to find I was better off leaving it covered and now I have something that is worth way less than it was before. Seems easier to sell it as is and use that cash to find something I want, no?

Getting thru that flat black paint is not an easy task. I have seen it done, but anyone that did it complained about the process.

When I was reworking my Goth project I had to route the pickups cavities. The top raised section was a white wood and the body was reddish, like you would expect from a variety of Mahogany.

Sorry, man. That's gorgeous.
I hope it went to a player and not a flipper.
