Thunderbird Club

Wasn't planning on buying something like this, but ran across it and decided to take the plunge with a modern Gibson Thunderbird. May not be my cup of tea, but we'll see. Don't think I like the aluminum pickguard, but my wife thinks it will look good on the white VP.

That PG will not fit a VP, I have one and tried it, for all their good points VPs are slightly misshaped compared to a Gibson, no crossover on these parts. Further, the screw pattern on the metal PG is different than the plastic Gibson original, there will be some extra holes underneath!

My PF-350 just crapped out...

I played this afternoon with no trouble. This evening, I turned it on to play and nothing, no lights.

I'll call my local L&M tomorrow and see what they can do for me (service wise) and what to do about an interim solution. Fortunately, they are "open" in the sense that they are doing service and curbside pickup. I'll have to wear the corona virus protection helmet I guess.

No lights? Sounds like a fuse..

That is exactly the thought I had. But I see no user serviceable fuse. Being CSA approved, it must have one so it must be internal. I wouldn't want to pull it apart and void any remaining warranty.
How long have you had it?
I can open mine to look.

I have talked to L&M. I bought it in 2018, so it is out of warranty.

They have a guy (contractor) who may be able to do something with it. They will get in touch with him and let me know.

Knowing it is out of warranty, I am tempted to open it up and have a look around - look for:
1. a fuse,
2. any obvious scorch marks,
3. any swollen electrolytic capacitors.
The list of first obvious things to look at without getting out a multimeter (or actually purchasing because I really don't know where mine is and may have not made it on a move over the years; besides it would be time for a digital one).

As nothing lights up, the best guess is that the fault is somewhere in the power supply.

Don't forget to look for any watermelon drippage.

Makes sense. I never hesitate to open stuff up for a look:thumbsup:
It’s probably easy to find that fuse. If you need to buy a multimeter, now you have an excuse:laugh: I would recommend getting one that can measure capacitance.

no prob. from what I remember those have a very tricky switching ps. Hard to troubleshoot. I can maybe walk you through it..
here's the link to the schem;

I wonder why it says “lie down” in the top right?

Thank you.

I am competent to change a fuse. I used to be competent to do a large number of repairs, but have long since forgotten things and skills have not been exercised for decades. If it isn't a fuse, It is going to a tech for pricing a repair.*
