Thunderbird Club

This dirty Bird came early! A little teaser shot before it gets a good cleaning hopefully in time for TBird Thursday.

Ordered this used VP from GC, didn't get any shipping info until a week after the order confirmation. Tracking info last week said delivery date was June 10th. Checked again yesterday afternoon and it said Delivered! Good thing I had it shipped to work, no one was home yesterday.

Took it home and did a quick quality check: zero relief, lowest action I have ever seen (lots of fret buzz, will deal with that after a string change/setup), just a slight buckle rash on the back (couple of minor scratches) otherwise no marks, dents or other scratches, all electronics work, some oxidation on the bridge/tuners, strings are .045 .065 .085 & .108? Probably .110 but caliper keeps reading .108.

Had a little play time with it and it sounds way different than my Epiphone TB IV, in a good way, which is what I was hoping for.
Will do a little comparison between my 2 TBs after this is cleaned and setup.

Yes, they sound very different. Tonally, they cover a LOT of range between them. Congrats, sir!

Good grief, how many pages. Carpal tunnel surgery all went well, don't get pins and needles anymore when I play, not do I get the pain in my arm at night which used to wake me up. Also thanks to @Chucky Stiletti for the massive help getting my ashdown sorted.

Congrats on all of that, and welcome back!

I use a Shure GLXD16 digital wireless tuning pedal...kills two birds w/ one stone. Good, reliable wireless and good, easy to see tuner. All metal pedal and battery pack, so built like a tank. Rechargeable 16 hour life, and you can even buy spare rechargeable battery to have on hand just in case.

That's what I have been using for five years or so. Mine has a dent in it. How did that happen? I don't know, but it just goes to show out tough it is. No problems so far, and that's been using it at least twice a week up until COVID time.

Take a deep breath. Hold it a few seconds. Now let it out. Breathe. repeat. Pick up steel cable holder. Close eyes. Think of favorite song. Play it in your head. Your hands will know what to do.

Wake up on floor. What happened? You forgot to breathe without directions to do so. Don't do that. Breathe. repeat.
Was there cold fried chicken involved when he woke up?

Now you tell me.

So happy with my Pelham Blue Jack Casady, that talks have already begun with Chicago Fret Works about refinishing my ebony Epi Thunderbird VP in PB. Matching pair of PB Epis seem like a winning combo once the band gets back to gigging

I can't do a google search for Thunderbirds without DHGate showing up. Always makes me thionk of (Dsomething) Heaven's Gate, which makes me steer clear.
I went back and added "for sale" to "Gibson non-reverse Thunderbird"(for sale). Try that.(?)

Bee-yoo-ti-ful!

I use the GHS Precision flats and like them a lot. They are on the 'stiff' side but I prefer the tautness for articulation. Some basses (necks) can be stressed by the extra tension but I've not had any issues with them having ill effect on any neck I have them on.
I like them as well on some basses. I have a really light set (95) on a '71 Jazz and 100s on a '58 Pbass. Come to think of it I have a set on my G&L BABE. Seems counterintuitive on that bass, but it's actually a great match. I know what you mean about stiff, and can't imagine a set over 100. Those are plenty stiff for me. The TBird got a set of 100s so I'll have to keep an eye on the neck, if they stay on it.

Glad things are progressing along...in the right direction.
