That sounds like the type of job I am happy to pay someone else to do. Someone who strips (ahem) finishes regularly will be much quicker, more efficient, and will not swear nearly as much as me.

True, but I like to do as much as I can myself, especially given my limited budget. I've built my own Sunn cabs, retolexed numerous cabs, I figure I can strip this thing even if it is a pain. At the end of the day, I'll have less than $200 total sunk into the new refin if everything goes well.

In other news, the headstock was really easy, WAY thinner finish than the neck itself, came off no problem. However, the wood on the face seems a little more prone to dig-ins with the scraper, so there's a few spots I'll have to fill and sand.

Well I decided if the fretboard side dots melt, so be it, easy to replace, so I went at the neck with the heat gun this morning. Talk about a WAY bigger PITA than the body. Finally got most of it done, but it's going to require a fair bit of sanding to remove the base coat, it didn't want to come off nearly as uniformly as the paint on the body. Still, much easier than sanding through the poly. It also seems the finish on the neck was noticeably thicker than on the body. All that's left now is the headstock and sides.

I had a lot of "fun" removing the thick finish on this one. It was a real b!t<# of a job.

But it turned out great IMHO.

LOL - probably the worst job I've seen at being blindfolded and faking not knowing what's in your hand. As others noted Y tuners on the Gibby and cloverleafs on the VP (which he messed with) then plugging in the bass Gibby top jack vs Eppi side (which he did), then playing with his hand on the pups so he can feel the trim rings on the VP vs none on the Gibby (which he did). All in all, not much of a genuine blind test.
You must be really fun at a magic show...

We can';t all be good at everyting and we must learn to allocate our time.

I appreciate that there are other people out there to do these things; I do not have to be one of them. There is only so much time I can allocate to things (learning and practicing) and my time and talents are better employed elsewhere. Just as I am sure that there are things you would consider your time and talents wasted on. [/philosophy]

When I had more time than money, I did everything myself if possible. In the process, I found the things I'm good at and really enjoy. Now, the time/money ratio has shifted. Since I like getting paid for what I do, I'm happy to pay others for what they do for a lot of things I used to do myself. Oil changes, for one. Spark plugs are a toss-up.

Yep.

I used to do lots of work on cars myself. Now I don't want to open the hood - that is for the mechanic/computer technician.

I was almost moved to comment, on YouTube, but decided against it. Not worth the effort. Besides, them perpetuating some of the bs just means more birds for the rest of us.
