Thunderbird Club

Does seem a bit quiet here except for the crickets! ;)

Bueller... Bueller... Bueller... anyone?

Day off yesterday..........The band came over and we rehearsed one last time for 4 hours before heading out to Pt. Angeles WA (Google Earth it) to play a two night stand (I'm super bummed I'll miss the Seattle GTG, but at least I will be playing the bass and getting paid very well!) at a local club.
I haven't decided which 3 basses to take yet...........what's a Queenie to do

You only have to choose two, because the Jackson is a given. :D

Actually, I probably will bring the Jackson as the backup , but I've been playing the white '89 Gibson with Lulls at most of the rehearsals, it got some new DRs and I've been using an Ampeg simulation on my Line6, - F$#^&*# rawrs! I need a third because we'll detune a half step for a couple encore tunes.

I'm thinking the third one might be a Thunderbird. Just a guess. Was it a close guess?

Well the only "other" bass is a Washburn AB20............But, it's still a matter of which one :roflmao:

There's a truly beatiful Greco Thunderbird for sale near me for a pretty good price, but unfortunately its a single pickup model. I play tuned to C standard and with a lot of power chords and drones, I just don't know if I would cut through enough with the single pickup. Disappointing, but oh well. That old school tobacco burst finishes the Greco T-birds have are really nice.

I'm back in Sydney next weekend, and I'm gonna try out the Greco and the Pelham Blue that I mentioned earlier, and see if I want to pick one up. I've had my Classic IV pro long enough now to know that I am a Thunderbird guy. Love the sound, the feel, and (vainly) love how I look with them. Its a 77 as well, the pics just ooze cool. I have heard they have a very aggressive 60s sound, so it may actually not need the bridge pickup.

Here's mine with Scott's Badbird II replacement bridge.

Has anybody changed the stock bridge on their Classic IV to a Hipshot SuperTone and noticed change in tone? I put one on mine and it seems to sound a little different. It seems a little less aggressive sounding and the neck pickup seems to have lost a bit of that 'hollow' tone that I love. But it's very subtle, so I'm not really sure if it's my imagination, and I don't really want to change the bridges back and forth to A/B them.

All I noticed with the change was a wee bit more sustain.

Yeah, I may be being a little neurotic about it. I'm typically of the belief that the bridge makes very little (noticeable) difference in tone. That is, unless you have a really crappy, cheap bridge on there. The only notable examples in my experience where a bridge swap really made a profound difference was with a '97 MIM Jazz that I used to own. It sounded pretty dull and lifeless until I swapped the stock bridge for a Badass II. The other was an SX Jaguar copy (Ursa 4) that I bought back in '09. It had an awful bridge that buzzed and rattled like crazy. Of course, I put a BAII on that one as well, but honestly, I could have used just about any other quality bridge to sort that one out.

For the record, the bridges that come on SX basses these days are actually pretty good.

My tin ear heard nothing different in my Goth's tone when I swapped to a Supertone. Aesthetically though, I just love its look.

The look is still growing on me. I didn't expect it to be so... bulky looking (probably looks less so on a Goth, but it really stands out on the Alpine White). I'm also not crazy about how the points on either side slightly hang over the edges of the center block. As I'm typing this, though, I feel like I'm probably just being fussy twit.

It is a bit bulky but blends in on my ebony 2001 Bird. The look doesn't bother me and I installed a chrome version on my RD when I owned that one. The Babicz is not as bulky and doesn't hang over the edge of the center section, but they are more expensive. Some people can't get past the looks of the Supertone but its something I can live with.
