I take that back, somewhat... In this pic, the point under the truss rod cover suggests a bevel.

I believe what you're seeing is just the bottom edge of the headstock, according to the perspective seen in the rest of the bass (body.) I don't see a definite bevel at all, but it's hard to tell.

It's not an angular bevel but a parallel cut-away, a recess if you will. Andy posted a link to this pic back a page ago and it's a good look at what's going on.

Killer, Scott! "Pete" is a little pitchy, but IMO, that just makes him sound more like the real deal! Very cool.
lol yeah his voice cracks at one point, Dave ( Pete) hasn't played in a band since the 90's, nor my brother Rick on drums. The guys were grousing about not being dressed for the camera but I thought it more important to get something out.

Yes. Kinda of odd in that the finish of the cut-away is rough compared to the upper surface. That pic I posted shows the difference in smoothness pretty well.

Isn't the entire body finished like that with no pore filling? I suspect the top of the headstock is a thin layer of laminate, rather than a bewelled edge... (I wonder if that sentence made any sense at all?)... ;)

Just a quick note and sorry it's a little off topic. We had some sad news for Canada this past weekend as Pete Traynor passed away at 75 years old. His work will live on forever I am sure. My Thunderbirds are run through a Traynor amp and two Yorkville cabs. They sound as good as anything I have ever heard or played. There is a thread to read, just thought I'd drop it in here for anyone interested. RIP Mr. Traynor

I'm pretty sure that's how Gibson has done it since they restarted production in the late 1980s or whenever it was. My 1991 has the plastic veneer on top of the headstock and the bevel isn't finished as smooth as the rest of the body. The 2001 is a little more pronounced that way. I don't remember how the 2015 is finished, but I would expect it to be the same. Oddly enough, the Epis have a much smoother finish on the bevel, probably because it's a thick poly finish instead of a thin nitro finish.

The raised portion on Bicentennial headstocks is black plastic. Here's my original paint '77 with some paint chipped off the corner.
