This Gibson model has a chrome Hipshot bridge, D=tuner and what I believe to be the exact pickups that come stock in the VP. I only need to swap the tuners and it will be a full black to chrome/nickel conversion.

I haven’t made the formal comparison yet as I need to restring both and I only received the Gibby on Saturday but will definitely post my opinions here soon.

So here’s where I’d like a little help from the club. The Gibson has the nickel pickups and covers installed. The bridge pickup is missing the black plastic pickup riser that the Epi VP comes stock with. I see quite a few people remove these. Anyone have one they’d like to part with? Otherwise are there any retailers that carry this part?

I look forward to posting my comparison in the future. First impressions is the VP is really going to give the Gibson a run for the money...

Both are lovely Thunderbirds, congratulations on them - feel free to jump in here with us, you've already asked a good question and we encourage that here. Your club number is 831.
Regarding the pickups, while similar they are not actually the same unless you're certain the ones in the Gibson came out of an Epi, most likely the pickups in the Gibson are aftermarket ones from EY Guitars. They're pretty nice I have a set in my Orville Thunderbird, they look identical to the Epi pickups until you turn them over, sonically they're similar, but I think the Epi have a little more going on. Regarding the black plastic riser you should be able to buy it as a separate item from Mike Lull, probably Thunderbucker Ranch as well.

Last time, I was so close to it in Rancho Cordova...while trying to load gasoline into the truck.
It got so close, was causing interference in the intercom system, and they almost shut down the loading facility.
Would've been worse than what it was if it had hit those huge storage tanks :(

Two words: Flaco Jiminez. More two words? Joel Guzmán. Debra Peters. Doug Sahm (rip). Augie Meyers. plenty of other Tejano and related accordion players. (I interviewed Joel for a local paper snd got invited to hear him play live on KUT along with Debra and Augie. They tore it up.)

I played upright with a friend and a couple others this afternoon. It was just messing around with pretty soft blues. Nothing especially challenging until one guitarist handed me his '62 Jazzmaster to trade instruments for a couple songs. The guitar is great. I am not great on guitar. Oh well.

So it's true then that Gibson has never made a more recent (post 70s) Thunderbird that has chrome pickups, and whenever I have seen a modern Gibson with chrome they would be replacements of some kind, correct? I've seen several, and didn't want to continue in ignorance about whether Gibson has ever recently used chrome pickups instead of the black plastic for their bases. Thanks for filling in an ignorance gap!
