Thunderbird Club

apparently, FedEx decided that my Thunderbird-adjacent project wasn't enough of a project... :banghead:

Ouch! If you plan on keeping it it is fixable but needs $$ compensation from FedEx. I had a custom (gilded) bas damaged by UPS and as I had insurance I filed a claim and although it took much back & both - they finally compensated me.

But that ‘02 Gibby is available...

Spare money is going into the home theater, such as it is. We bought our first new, good TV last month. Today I bought a BluRay player to replace the ancient DVD/VCR so we could actually make use of the whole screen. Two HDMI outs, one for audio. The 12 y/o HK AVR 347 receiver will happily pass the audio through to the TV if I cable it up that way. Or if I connect the BR player to the TV and the receiver, audio and video will go to the TV. Nut either way, if I select the HDMI input on the HK, no sound comes out anywhere. If I switch to another input, sound comes from the TV. The TV audio is decent, but not that loud, and not a lot of bass.

I have ruled out the player and cables. The receiver works fine for any of the non-HDMI inputs (CD, tape, etc.) My hypothesis is that the player insists on outputting an audio format the receiver can't deal with. Seem reasonable?

I'm not finding any decent, affordable players with analog audio outs. The only other output on the player is an optical. The HK has optical inputs. Is it worth getting an optical cable to try, or do I need to just buy a new receiver with HDMI? The sub-$300 HDMI receivers I'm seeing tend to have almost no analog inputs; I'm starting to think I need a new and an old receiver to handle everything.

Once I can get past all that, I can start fighting off onslaughts of Thunderbirds demanding to be bought. Until then, they can't even penetrate my consciousness. Thoughts?

Well that sucks! Are they going to make it right for you or are they going to come up with BS excuses for why it is not their fault?

I filed a claim with FedEx tonight, but not gonna hold my breath on it. The break is annoying, but I bought this thing for cheap, specifically to be a project. So I'm not really super concerned, I'm just looking at it as an opportunity to gain experience at this type of repair.

Which, given the propensity of Thunderbirds to have this problem, may come in handy :roflmao:

We are not a cult. We are a biker gang.

Hmmm..."The T-birds"....sounds familiar somehow...

Motorcycle gang ... as cyclist/motorcyclist I've deliberately avoided using the term "biker" for many years... I am either a cyclist or a motorcyclist depending on what is underneath me at the time.

In that case, it is an easy fix, and one that will be more stable if done correctly.

Haha, yes!
But, most fortuitously, it wasn't an actual Thunderbird. If it was, I'd send you the headstock to keep in your case as a spare ;)

LOL I forgot about that.

a-hem... careful, people may think it's a cult... :cautious:
Wait, it isn't?

Hi Jon, my apologies, I thought you already were a member! I have added you to the club roster above, please do be welcome here with us ( I hope you've been feeling that way already) and of course watch out for our Watermelon lovin' Canadian!
Yeah, he's a seedy fellow.

Well, it's back together. :cigar:

Ended up changing the bridge pot, and now it seems to be working. But doesn't work like my other Thunderbirds; the bridge pickup is significantly less loud, and the two together interact differently. But, maybe that's because of the pickups? (Epiphone TB-Plus vs. Gibson TB-Plus? Their resistances measure differently... ) Maybe the CTS pots vs. factory Epiphone? I dunno...

I still prefer the way it sounds with just the front pickup only, so maybe getting rid of the superfluous pickup should remain in consideration

A spare! :D
That's just too funny and never said before as I recall. (Maybe so but it was way too many hundreds of pages ago.) Going to have to remember that one!

Needs to be the standard warning/introduction for new members lest the initial shock simply be too much for them! Especially the dancing one that I still can't get past the trauma of. (Darn you PillO!)
