Thunderbird Club

As long as we are discussing prices, got $100K just lying around? The seller's description is pretty funny. He says Frost Blue was too "girly" to be a big seller. Really?

1964 Gibson Thunderbird IV Bass “Frost Blue” Custom Color Rarest of the Rare !

Pretty sure that's the same seller as the $29K white one. I sort of want to get a bird and do it up similar to that frost blue one. I always thought it was metallic from the photos though, so I'd like to paint one up in Ice Metallic Blue.

What made you change back to the original pickups?

I was finding with the sound I was going the thunderbuckers were too noisy and really focused in the midrange. Beautiful tone, but for my band the bass holds a really prominent role so me sounding as thick as possible is the goal.

I never actually gave the TB+ a go in the band mix so I put them back and instantly even when recording DI I could hear they were for me.

Dark, angry, powerful, big output, quiet, tamed highs. Through my GK2001rb and fearful 1515/66/1 I don't get any mud just more of what I like about the Gibson with TB+ sound.

Plug it into a compressor and B7k with a side chained fat sandwich and I am creating a wall of thunderbird goodness

Same guy selling both... There's even a picture with both basses on his T-Bird IV listing...

Shame you didn't try with the original pickups in a band setting in the first place - Could have saved you a lot of money...

Anyways, you can always get chrome covers and pickup rings for your TB+ pickups to complement your chrome hardware... :)

So after the teaser from last weeks show and keeping you all in suspense for a week, I suppose it's time to uploade a few live shots with the birds and their 6-stringed sibling:

Nice pic's Michael!! Just curious, do the blue and red special editions sound any different from each other at all?

Not that I've noticed, the way I use them in my band setting...

They are both set up more or less identically and have the same gauge Roto Swing Bass strings on them.

In the band I hook them up with a wireless transmitter and go directly into Apple Mainstage where they get heavily treated with NI GuitarRig and the Rammfire plugin - With these settings they are interchangeable...

I have seen some Greco and other 'Birds for sale in the $600 to $700 range. My 'Bird buying habit is in remission for the time being, so I didn't find out whether there was some issue that was driving down the price or whether that's just what they go for these days.

Yes, that is right in the States from what I can see. Basses are generally more expensive here since the exchange rate went south.

That's pretty funny. Guess no one told Fender that in 1968 when they came out with their Pink Paisley Tele bass. They were popular then and are now as well. I have a 1991 reissue (both paisley and floral) and when I absolutely have to play a Fender they get to see daylight.

Now if Gibson would make a paisley TBird I'd be all over it! Come to think of it, if Gibson would just make ANY bass I'd be all over it! Hopefully they will start bass production back up someday soon!
