I have both, the Greco, especially if it's a Thunderbird II - not even a contest. The VP is very nice but there's WAY MORE going on with a Greco, I realize this may not be popular with the VP owners and I'm not here to rile anyone's feathers, just answering the question.

While turkey or ham have often graced our table in the past, this year we are enjoying our German heritage so we'll be have Sauerbraten, which is a beef roast that you marinate in red wine and spices for several days. I'm doing the cooking for the household, here its as of 11/22 when I started the marinade.

I also have both the Greco II (1977 vintage) and the first run of the Eppi VP IV.

For features I'd give the edge to the VP (better bridge and neckthrough design).
For looks it's close, but again I'd give the edge to the VP (nice retro look).
For purchase price I'd say it's the VP, a used VP is a few hundred less than a used Greco.
For resale price it's the Greco, it has been holding or increasing in value for years.
For feel, again it's close but the Greco feels a little faster and more custom taylored to me.
For sound, it's no contest, the Greco overwhelms the VP in every genre.

If I had to get rid of one of the two it would be the VP, I can always find another one when I want one. The Greco is much harder to replace and will only get more so. If I had $1000 burning a hole in my pocket I'd buy the Greco. If I only had $700 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd be perfectly happy buying a VP and saving up for a Greco on the next purchase.

Disclaimer: my Greco is a single pup II, my VP is a dual pup IV. How much of the Greco magic is attributed to the pup configuration is uncertain. But there is no question that the Greco pup is a raging monster, much more so than the Thunderbird on steroids sound of the VP.

Hello, has anyone in the group added a Hipshot bass xtender drop D tuner on one of these Thunderbird Classic IV Pro basses? It seemed like the GB7 was a direct drop in however nut doesn't go through the front of the headstock to thread into the tuner. Did I buy the wrong tuner? Do I need to widen the tuner hole on the headstock? Any input would be appreciated.

I've heard, the tuner holes need to be reamed out slightly. But I don't have any first hand experience with it, sorry :(

I'm about as big a fan of VPs as any one, second only to Scott, and no feathers were riled! Other than the reminder that I don't own a Greco...at least not yet! They seem so interesting.
