Thunderbird Club

cool editing - early T-bird sighting - and Gentle Giant's unique music ...

Saw that awhile back...very ambitious! And Gentle Giant are something of a guilty pleasure for me. Don’t normally go for the wizard rock :)

Me neither, but GG has been in my ears since the early '70s. My good friend to this day was my art-school roommate then and he had GG LP's. I'd never heard of them but their complex and strange music set itself apart from the other prog-rockers like Yes and King Crimson. I really liked hearing this song after many, many years of not hearing it. Pretty sophisticated sh-t!

Is this a NAAMS teaser? If so, there may be some GAS issues for some of us.

No, they're prototypes done for Gene Simmons, KISS will play a NYE show from Dubai, I think there will be a Live Stream of it. The basses will supposedly be played during that show.

And a drum kit with roto-toms. Kudos for weirdness when those turn up.

My favorite is the African Cuica "talking drum" (not included in this vid) which I was introduced to in the late '60s via Miles Davis in his Bitches Brew/Live Evil/Big Fun period. So expressive! Like an animal verbally communicating w/o words. I've always felt it inspired Miles to use a Wah-Wah pedal which gave his playing a similar kind of expression.

i had similar issue with EB-0 i was gifted with headstock snapped off , i happened to also be gifted a funky delaminating 24 fret neck i started whittling on neck and body to marry them just to make interesting wall hanger but it ended up seeming to tune and play well so i really went into frankenstien mode and defretted neck removed funky 3 point bridge and replaced it with schaler type bride that gibson used on 1980 explorer basses as well as others ... it has not tall enuff so i cut a piece of a

luminum scrap metal which came off an old skill saw and used it as shim to get starting point for intonation etc ... the damn piece of aluminum made the bass souind incredible and i bet it would do same trick on thunderbird ... im serious you will be amazed at the sustain and clarity gained... so this could also bridge across the 3 poster holes and you can actually attach bridge to spacer plate then attach it to bass or visa versa ... and oh yeah btw the poor bass had been painted twice i had to strip off a blue and white piant disaster carefully to get back to this which isnt mint by any means but for starting out as a wall hanger now im recording a couple new tracks on new album so ... im stoaked !

I did an aluminum plate with individual bridges for my MIJ Burns NR:
Vintage Japanese Basses - for those who appreciate them
In my case I just needed to get more height. It made a huge difference to the sound. And being able to adjust individual height and intonation is much nicer.

The Babicz three point comes with a 1/8 plate to add height if needed. They’re in place on the ‘15 and NR. Not sure if it effects the sound at all. Some day I might experiment.

I've been listening to/learning this, I hadn't ever watched the video until very recently, I'd swear there's a shot in Pt. Angeles, WA near the beginning - More likely it's Vancouver Island with perhaps a scene shot at The Buchart Gardens @Engle maybe you can shed some light on this for me?

Great song, still more than relevant.

I removed the spacer from my 2015 and noticed no difference in sound or sustain. With it on, my E string saddle was nearly at its lowest height setting. With it off, my E string saddle is nearly at its highest setting. Of the two extreme positions, the highest setting is technically a better place to be for intonation since it offers a better witness point and sharper breakover angle.

I didn't know Schaller made a Gibson branded 3D style bridge! It's sort of a cross between a 3D and a BA. In a related note - Schaller makes proprietary riser plates for their 3D bridges.

One of my all time favorite songs! Bruce Thomas had some of the tastiest lines of the late seventies. I haven’t worked on this line in a while. One of his more difficult ones due to the bpm. Thanks for reminding me to revisit it!

Thunderbirds were part of the stable for nineties alternative bands. here's a couple.

This one is a bit of an oddball because the original bass line was recorded using a Musicman stingray in the very capable hands of Josephine Wiggs who wasn't even in the band when this performance was done. But hearing that epic bass line being done on a vintage sixties Thunderbird played upside down is still cool.
