Thunderbird Club

I grew up watching Pokemon when i was a kid (i'm 22), but i'm not into playing pokemon GO. I've had my phase of watching it & playing the card game, this is kinda out of control when people go to great lengths to catch them all!

In other news, i must return the fretboards i've received because my friend & I ordered guitar boards, not bass. So just a simple exchange & i would say within a week or so i can begin to finish my thunderbird build for good. Still need to get a blowtorch & only burn the stripes when i'm alone at home :) & on subject of gibson/epiphone, last night at work there was a guy who came to pick up his 1975-76 wine red Gibson Grabber that he had left for repair (unfortunately the truss rod is broken so they couldn't lower the action). But i did get to have a picture with the bass :P I love vintage stuff cause it's not often you'll see one in person & actually get to play it. I asked him if ever he considered selling it, that' i'd buy it in a heart beat. He kindly accepted & i gave him my information. Who knows, :D I'm just glad i got to see it & half play it.

& rig news, i called the amp tech my dad went to see way back for his fender blues jr amp. Sadly he doesn't do any reconing of speakers (i've only got one that's stiff the others work perfectly) But he said that he had replacements so i might just get a few (just precaution) & i'm also bringing him my friend's Trace elliot head (it stopped working in toronto at his gig - when he had the RD bass the first time ;) ) I'll have my rig ready for recording & gigs & he'll have his head hopefully before he leaves for his week long tour in september.

I didn't realize you were only 22. You have accomplished a whole lot already. Keep up the good work.

I know this might be a bit of a wrong part of the forum to post it, but I had installed new 3 point bridge by Hip shot on my Epi TB and having issues intonating low E string - Saddle is as far as it can go away from the pickup (spring completely compressed), but 12th fret pressed is still sharp. I had measured the distances from the nut to 12th fret , and from 12th to saddle, and they seems to be pretty similar between old stock and new Bridge.
Could it be the dead string, since i haven't changed them really?

New strings and intonating are like a pocketful of singles in a tittie bar: they work well together. :D

Thank you! in such short time, i like to keep myself busy. I've just finished designing my bass road vault to house all the basses i'll have (current & later builds) + the two combo amps i've got. It's a little over 4 ft long, 19 inch deep & just a tad over 5 ft tall excluding the casters to roll it around. housing 12 basses & two combos that's pretty good won't take up much room since i can stack stuff ontop such as hard cases & misc, i might have a built in drawer to have straps picks & cables & batteries for when i've got pedals.

Could be. Is the action a lot higher since you changed the bridge? Like it could be pulling it sharp?

I think I know what do to here... concentric volume/pan pot. Just one locus, keeping the deadly simple vibe going. I can always do another for tone if I really need to.

I had sold my original Gibson Blackbird to a friend (so I could purchase my black Hamer FBIV) and he was going to replace the kill switch with a stacked volume knob. I ended up buying it back from him before he performed the mod but that seems like a good option if you don't want to add extra knobs.

Congrats on the new bass and welcome back to Birdland!!

I just pulled the trigger on a 2013 NR Bird. I've been wanting one for a while and they have become pretty hard to find.

I went with a sunburst model, there was also a Pelham blue one on Reverb; I kind of wanted the blue one but it wasn't in as good of shape as the burst, the blue bass came with a gig bag (original case with the burst) and even more importantly the burst ended up being over $200 less.

Depending on how much I like it, I may do a Pelham blue refin. If I do, I will replace the three point bridge with one of Scott's two piece set-ups. I already have a set of nickel plated T-bird pickups from the Gibson custom shop that I have been saving since the mid 90's.

Or I may just enjoy it just the way it is. Vintage sunburst with black hardware looks pretty sweet too.

I'll post pics when it arrives.

Thanks! And there's an interesting idea... as much as I like the kill switch, I'm pretty sure the volume knob is adequate. Always has been up to now... just gotta find the right hardware.

These are the two stacked knobs I'm considering for my Fernandes Bird. I want to add individual volume on this one instead of having both pickups full-on all the time.

I like this idea. I'm thinking volume in center, pan is the ring. With a pan, maybe tone is less necessary...

I dunno, man.. I think a tone control is necessary on a T-bird. On my Fender-style basses, I usually keep the tone dimed, but I use the tone a lot more on my Classic IV. I'd have a stacked pot for master volume and tone and a regular pot for blend.

Is there only room for one pot in the Blackbird's control cavity? Or do they have a standard cavity with only one hole drilled in the top?

I'm a little unclear on the concept: Pan pot and a vol pot? or combo pan and vol in one concentric? The latter would be a triple stack since a pan is its own two stack. Not sure that it exists but it's a very interesting approach! I'd definitely give one a try :)
