For those interested in the looks comparison between the Neon Reds & Black Beauties....

Black!

As for the sound comparison....from what I can tell so far, I feel like the Black Beauties are slightly brighter. I'll play them for a bit to get a better feel for the sound, before I try the Nexus set :)
The neon red is the wrong shade of red; it doesn't look right. The black looks better.

These echo-y, dirge-y songs/performances were very characteristic of that period. You just don't hear that anymore. It's very emotive/introspective (yah, I know - pot helped in this respect) but honestly - it's like modern audiences can't handle "deep" music anymore. sad
The dirges are still out there, but they are much less common. A recent one that leaps to mind is Was Ich Liebe by Rammstein.

From a looks standpoint, I love the boldness of the red strings with the dark wood neck, but can't get past the clash in different shades of red with the body. That said, I don't like the looks of the Black Beauties at all, and that's odd because I would have thought they would have pulled the black hardware together with the red body nicely. I'm of the mind now that Silver Stars might be the perfect look for that bass.

Of course the more important thing is how they sound and feel, but they might all be fairly close in that regard since they are all coated DR strings. I haven't tried the reds but I did find the BB strings to be a hair brighter in sound than Silver Stars but not by much.

this thing’s growing on me something fierce...the neck pickup can move mountains..

Ditto - I'm finding that my Greco II delivers a massive gut punch exceeding any P bass I've played or owned. Not sure if it's any different than a soloed neck pup on a Greco IV but I'm sure tempted to add a IV to the arsenal just to find out. Here she is in all her nearly 45 year old mojo glory...

I feel the same about the color, I think. It'll be interesting to see how the difference with the Nexus strings are, when I get to them.

Per the DR website, the Silver Stars are the same as the Neon Reds, other than the color. The Black Beauties seem to be their only coated string that's a different metal.

I wonder how the color on the Red Devils compares to the neon red?

California baby!

Yes, initially an (alder bodied) '93 American Standard... but heavily modded; Schaller Deluxe sculpted F-tuners (it came with a standard set), "relic'd" Burgundy Mist Metallic re-fin by MJT, lightened/chambered body (under the pg), custom-cut mint pearl pg, '93 FCS/Kubicki 9v pre, Schaller 3D bridge, Nordy NJ4 (passive) pu's. Killer tone/sound. The J I most grab. "cutting through" is an understatement.

And to stay in line (on Thunderbird Thursday) - I have a T-bird shaped object with the same FCS/Kubicki 9v pre - again - killer.

^^^^^^
this bass

Don't recall seing a Saunders before, she sounds great.
Loved the song lyrics :-)

I've never lumped Trower & Hendrix together.

I always find it interesting when I hear/read/discover similar statements about this/that/the-other-thing and find that yes, in general, people do believe x/y/z — but it's fresh news to me. In some cases, I wonder "How did I not see that?"

In many cases, such as this one, it just never occurred to me.

Strangely, Trower seems to be coming up on radar, increasingly so, the last few years.

I fell in love with the Strat because of Buddy Holly.

PS: @D.M.N. Thanks for posting the Trower links

There's a store up the street from me that has a 360 and two 361 cabs for $2100, but the blue faces were painted on cabs and the grills are gone, unfortunately. But they'd be sweet to run next to the Hiwatt and Sunns
That's not a terrible price, even with the paint. The grills are replaceable. I can't say whether the logo is, but I don't much care about that anyway. A 360 preamp can run four 361 cabinets. That would be overkill beyond overkill. Nothing beats excess except more excess.

My 360 had the blue painted flat black at one point. The previous owner had the speaker reconed and got the black paint off the 361 cabinet panel but left the paint on the preamp. I started taking it back off with a Dremel and scotchbrite pad, but that was damaging the aluminum. So, it's just kind of ugly for now.

Maybe someday there will be three more 361 cabinets and a reason to make that much sound pressure and a roadie to move the whole rig. Until then, one full sized 361 is more than plenty.

We are shallow around here. Never mind the sound, it's all about the visuals.

I have Red Devils on the P-Bird. They work very well on that bass, but it's a similar red to the strings, with just a tad of green in it. No blue like your Thunderbird's red.

Loved the song lyrics :)

Saunders (don't know his 1st name) attempted to produce basses in the late '80s but didn't last long. Little is known but it appears he made two models; Concord I and Concord II. (one & two pu versions I'll presume) I found that NOS neck on eBay many years ago for a great price, as it it a quality P-style neck. I later learned they were made (commissioned by Saunders) in the newly created Fender Custom Shop. ('86). I bid on another neck like it later but was outbid and haven't seen another since. Then recently, a tb member sent me pics of his newly acquired Saunders Concord I. Perhaps it was the colour that derailed his attempts at selling them... ;)

That is a great 80s colour and a great 80s style.

If those were made today (and had a humbucker) I would totally rock one! But I am an outlier and should never be used as a proxy for the wider market.
