Worse, I still can't play. I do not have enough grip strength to fret a note. Neurologist consult isn't scheduled until the end of May; I am working on getting that moved up. But there will be an MRI at a minimum adding a couple of weeks and then probably a month or two wait for plastic surgery. So playing bass and kayaking are really getting screwed up this summer...

No. First, that is too difficult. I don't know how you manage.

Second, the weakness would then be in my plucking hand; equally problematic. The profound weakness means that I can't move my fingers properly.

Looks like you are going to beat me to it..I'm going to do a Lake Placid Blue when the right VP shows up.

The goal is something in the ballpark like this. Not sure if a black pickguard would look better?

That one has aged beautifully.

New knobs, new pickup screws, pickup height adjusted. Brought it to band practice today, made former owner sad. It was just languishing in a closet, so I don't feel bad at all. Probably the bass I'll use for this project, the look suits the music.

Playing bright strings up by the bridge can get a similar effect.

While usage of picks is often derided out in the GP I regard them as the ignition switch when playing a Thunderbird.

That’s rough, but at least you have a path forward to get it fixed.

That's what I'm saying - My other basses sound good with a pick, especially when the song really demands it... with this one, it's almost like it was designed for it. The problem with that is, I'm not good enough with a pick to do it justice, LOL

Just do it, as they say - you'll get better at over time. I'll be pretty rusty when my band finally gets back to rehearsing, should be interesting!

The black guard would set it apart from other Birds IMO. Lots of white guards on Birds. I like to see things mixed up a bit.
