Thunderbird Club

yep and at 500 bucks a set I’ll play whatever the BL “rather” me play....tweechie zone? Nah...Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorious...and on and on....

Camp rivalry gets pretty silly after a while -

I have a '73 Jazz and while it does not sound like a Thunderbird, some knob twidling on the amp and I can get it to sound good to my ears.

Never understood the whloe "jazz basses sound nasal" thing that only seems to live here on TB. Different bass, different amp settings....

Nice checking. Exactly - thing is, a Jazz bass can sound 'nasaly' if that's what you want. But like pretty much any bass it can be made to sound otherwise if one so choses. I'll extrapolate that all basses have their own unique voice based on the pu's/electronics, pu placement, the neck, the strings, body wood, how it's dialed (on-board), what amp it's going through and how it's adjusted, and most importantly - ones interface with it. Whatever bass promotes personal expression is the goal. I personally always leave the door open to discover a bass that delivers that regardless of brand, configuration or preconceptions.

LOL - I don't have that problem. Any BL I played for would "rather" that I play somewhere else, therefore I'm free to choose what "I" like best.

Seriously, that said, I do have a number of Jazz basses and Jazz pup equipped basses (all purchased before I got bit by the Gibson bug). However, I have yet to find a song that was originally played with a Jazz that doesn't sound just as good (sometimes even better) played with a P bass a P/J or a Thunderbird. Given the right strings, the right amp settings and right playing technique just about any electric bass can fit in the mix properly in a live setting.

To your point though, in any situation, the sound engineer can make or break you and the BL does have the final say. So as a paid player it's probably in your best interest to lean in the direction the BL prefers you lean. In which case, whip out that Jazz and flog it hard baby.:bassist:

Tone is so difficult to describe, especially things like grind. I like a crispness to rounds, but not clank. Roto 66s on the '76 don't have clank (not with my settings, which are fairly flat with the bass and mid boosted slightly). They have a mid punch to them, similar to Boomers, but boomers sound bigger and that mid punch is a little lower. But then again, I don't try to get all may basses to sound the same either. I try to let each one do their thing, while having solid and thick lowend. Some basses I want more crispness (top end) and others less. I'm complicated...among other things!

For example, yesterday I played a Jazz (forgive me, for I have sinned...), with DR Pure Blues. They sounded decent to average depending on if I was playing with fingers or pick. Fingers made them sound kind of indistinct. Either way they good lows, kind of lacking in the mids, and had a brightness, but not like a new SS brightness. What I found I was wanting was more low mids for punch. It sounded fine, but not ideal for me.
Interesting. I love Pure Blues on my JC. Lots of bottom end punch. Not too bright (or is that just the user...)

Love the looks, feel and balance of a nice J bass and have owned several very nice ones. My problem is I’d spend the whole show trying to make it sound like a P bass. Love when David Sims (Jesus Lizard) plays one. Sounds awesome. I just can’t quite get what I want out of one. What I loved most about my Fano JM4 is it sounded like a thicker, punchier J bass to me and played and balanced just as well.

Something else I've noticed is that EVERYBODY that has a JC bass loves it. I have yet to hear one person speak ill of that bass. That really peaks my interest and gets the GAS boiling up for a near future purchase.

However, I'm still waiting (for now at least) for the inevitable Eppi NR VP release in shell pink or firemist gold. In the meantime I'll continue to drool over the JC pics I come across on the used gear sale sites. Please don't (please do, please do) flash any pics of your JC.

I'll (not) do that later.

You’re right of course. Amp settings can make one sound good. But The ergonomics aren’t for me. Too much body between the bass side edge and the pickups. A P on the other hand is great with the pickup around the waist. Less body between the edge and the pickup, which I like to play over, is more comfortable for me.
