Thunderbird Club

LOL - I don't have that problem. Any BL I played for would "rather" that I play somewhere else, therefore I'm free to choose what "I" like best.
(Posted by a lifetime member of the Lousy player with expensive gear club)

Seriously, that said, I do have a number of Jazz basses and Jazz pup equipped basses (all purchased before I got bit by the Gibson bug). However, I have yet to find a song that was originally played with a Jazz that doesn't sound just as good (sometimes even better) played with a P bass a P/J or a Thunderbird. Given the right strings, the right amp settings and right playing technique just about any electric bass can fit in the mix properly in a live setting.

To your point though, in any situation, the sound engineer can make or break you and the BL does have the final say. So as a paid player it's probably in your best interest to lean in the direction the BL prefers you lean. In which case, whip out that Jazz and flog it hard baby.:bassist:

I guess I'm fortunate, I don't have that problem either ;)

I get to play what I want, how I want, with what I want. Within the limits of my (admittedly not awesome) abilities, of course. And the limits of how loud the neighbors will put up with....:meh:

(I also don't have the problem of owning a Jazz Bass :D :bag: )

from what I understand, this was recorded on a J bass onto 2” tape....nuff said...

For those that like 'em, more power(unh, unh!)to you. The only way I'd have one is if it was a gift from someone whose feelings I cared about[that would be no one]or worth a ship(sp?)load of money so I could flip it.
Tweetchie zone.

I've gotta admit I like playing the two I have. This one is a custom ordered black '71 (with the odd PU spacing). It's about a close to mint as it cold be and having been played some. I even have all the covers and original strap. Currently it's wearing GHS Precision Flats.

Coupla semi(pun intended)related points.
When I was driving-commercially-my own truck it hadda be a Freightliner. When I sold mine and drove o.p.'s trucks, I drove what was provided, occasionally a Freightliner, but also Macks, I-H's, Fords, Sterlings, whatever. For me a Jbass is uncomfortable to play so whatever tone I could get out of it is irrelevant. I'll never own one.
AFA 'backline' and/or supplied gear, no place around here does that. Many mango seasons ago I played a club in Miami Beach that had 3 rotating bands nightly so there was shared equipment. Didn't affect me-I was on sax.

Here's a Thunderbird involved in a disaster on stage.

Now when this footage was shot, the Manic Street Preachers were just getting big and the sound crew were told that Ritchie Edwards (the guy with the tele) wasn't a really that good a guitarist and that his signal should be buried in the mix, while James' signal should be twice as loud.

Clear instructions, right?
Well it might have helped if that sound crew was told WHO was who. You can see James turning to the crew "Turn Ritchie down!" but like a trooper he continued on.

I actually like it. Love the finish. In the early 80s I had an all white jazz when they had white pickups and white knobs. It also had white binding. I put a mirror pick guard on it that was a special order. Looked fantastic and sounded good with a 2X15 cab. A certain amount of gaudiness is good for the soul.

Preaching' to the choir! :D

Something else I've noticed is that EVERYBODY that has a JC bass loves it. I have yet to hear one person speak ill of that bass. That really peaks my interest and gets the GAS boiling up for a near future purchase.

However, I'm still waiting (for now at least) for the inevitable Eppi NR VP release in shell pink or firemist gold. In the meantime I'll continue to drool over the JC pics I come across on the used gear sale sites. Please don't (please do, please do) flash any pics of your JC.
I'll (not) do that later.

Consider it (un) done!

I can fake my way in jazz, and my TBird VP works really well in that context.
I also have a J shaped object that I enjoy playing - except it’s at my kid’s high school.

Whenever our drummer pulls out brushes (which isn't often) I automatically play Jazzy.
