Put the chromes on today, good choice. I love this bird. Again and again.

The new CTS 500K pots arrived yesterday and I just set about rewiring the Bird. The pots are a standard 6mm (1/4in) and wouldn't you know it the pots are just a wee bit too fat to go through the holes in the woodwork. Never mind, I'll ream one out a bit, won't take long. Several minutes later the pot fits ... and the shaft is too short.

These are the ones I bought:

What next?

Weird... That ought to be the right size. How does it compare to the one you removed?

Epi pot on the left, CTS on the right. The thread is smaller diameter and it's a couple of mm longer.

Here's what I think I'd do.

Install a new pot without soldering and use a a spacer made from a manila folder or some such cardboard to allow you to press your top hat onto the shaft without seating it all the way down to surface of the bass. After removing the spacer shim, check to see if the top hat is secure enough to leave like that. 2 mm less shaft engagement shouldn't really make a difference for a control knob, IMO.

Unless of course, the engagement of the original shaft was already marginal.

In my defense, you did say the shaft was too short, not the threads.

In your defence you'll need a whole team of, well whoever it is that can defend you :roflmao:

Isn't English just odd in that common words can sound the same, have the exact same meaning and be spelled differently depending on where you live in the once formidable British Empire.

I'm curious, @ColinLP, what it is that struck you so funny? I'm not offended, I just don't get the humor and want in on the joke. :)

Your not wrong about the language, your color and our colour, grey and gray.

The defence thing was me thinking about a comment in the film "Field of Dreams" when James Earl Jones says "You're seeing a whole team of psychiatrists aren't you?", not that I think your a nutter I'm just accusing you of being one in a friendly way of course :roflmao: Again that's a common thing with cross Atlantic comparisons, humour sometimes can be completely lost on each other, happens to me all the time, I'm sat here thinking ***??? and then there's some guy over the water thinking WTFs up with this guy :roflmao:

Never saw the film so the comment was lost on me.

Yup, definitely had me scratching my head... carry on. :roflmao:

The spelling difference of words we Americans spell with "ize" at the end where others use "ise" is a good clue to authorship as well.
