Thunderbird Club

I assume the passive pickups you're using are the one's you've referenced above? Did you leave the controls stock (V, blend, T, T) or do something different there too? Result was more what, more the classic T-Bird sound?

Yes, a pair of 9.2kΩ chromes and surrounds from EY Guitar Parts - available via eBay or direct from their website. I removed 2 pots completely and have V-V only (can't remember having rolled off the tone on any bass ever).

These pickups are actually from the factory that supplies a famous guitar maker, formerly of Kalamazoo MI and more recently resident in Nashville TN. So yes, they are closer to a classic TBird sound than the stock pups. You may get even better results from Thunderbucker Ranch or another custom builder, but the EYs are as spendy as I want to be with a $300 bass.

UPDATE: photo added to illustrate pot/knob arrangement.

Hi Gang, I don't mean to high jack the thread but I was wondering what the "secret handshake" is for becoming a member of your T-bird club? I just joined the ranks of Gibson Thunderbird owners a month back and happened upon your group here. So, I figured I would pop in to see if I could play in your reindeer games and get one of those cool numbers.

Here at the Thunderbird club, every thunderbird & owner is equal & serve under our majesty the Queen: @TBird1958!

Initiation is as follows: & you may not remember after a while like the rest of us ;)
- Post picture of thunderbird: Either live shot from a gig or just simply the bass as proof
- Drink half a bottle of absinthe & recite one of Shakespeare's monologues in your best Scharzenegger impression
- Must wear a mini skirt as tribute to the Queen: (depending on the day, you might wear a pink ribbon on your tush)

We welcome you with arms open, glasses full (of whatever you may be drinking :P ) & if any question arise, feel free to ask & share your stories overtime!

I like the way you think Andii!

Stevis, please be welcome here, Absinthe (and the miniskirt) are optional, we used to suggest running naked thru one's township whilst screaming "Thunderbirds rule!" at the top of your lungs as well - Too many potential members ended up on two day passes with orange overalls....................So just a picture of your new Bird is proof enough. Gig shots and questions are encouraged as is good humor :)

All Tbirds are welcome. We like other Gibson basses as well.
Oh and butt bows are favoured and are often discussed.

I can't let you guys shoulder this heavy burden alone - have cleaver will travel! See ya there.
Always nice to see who you're dealing with, they put out a video:

On a more factual note, the video was made not far from where I live, the title "Gogs" is the nickname for people living in the north of Wales, "gogledd" meaning north :- Gogs. Completely irrelevant fact ;)

I loved your sheep meme in a thread out in the general population recently.

Ahhh.... I had been wondering what happened to that part of the membership rules....

Had that discussion with my luthier a couple weeks back when I had my Pro V in for work. He's not a fan of active basses anyway, says they limit and choke the tone.

With respect, it ain't necessarily so. Good active circuits can expand and enhance an instrument's voice. Your luthier's opinion may be based on limited experience with the cheaper end of the spectrum. A John East or Aguilar pre or a pair of X series EMG pickups, for instance, kick ass.

My favorite local shop put a Tone Monster pre in my TBIV. The short story is that the circuit boards are too tall and had to be de-soldered from the pots, relocated, and jumped with wire. And they did that for the original price they quoted me, even though it was a few days worth of work to make it happen. I've got pics if you guys wanna see 'em again.

Found a TC Electronics Spectra Comp used at Sam Ash for $58. Now I gotta decide if my Zoom MS60B is up for sale, as all I was using on it was a compressor. Might see about trading it for a bass chorus like the MXR unit, or perhaps the TCE version. I'm a big fan of the MXR stuff but I'm also fascinated by the Tone Print technology. It would also help if I had a job....
