Ok...so, I've tried REALLY hard to make the T-bird sound work with my band(s) and it's not doing it. :(
Was going to swap p-ups, but I don't want to be back in a money sink bass like I was with my Spector.
Will likely be looking to trade it for a light Fender P-bass of similar value, once I take some pics.

I understand this sadness. The 'Bird was my main bass until I picked up a G3 reissue and the simple fact is that the G3 sounds better in the mix with the band. I'm going in tonight to mess with amp settings to see if I can get the 'Bird to cut a bit more without losing the growl.

The thing is, I love the looks & I like the way it plays...but I just can't cop a tone I like. If it was a Gibson, I'd change the p-ups because the resale value down the road wouldn't be an issue. But on a $650 NEW bass, throwing $300 in p-ups at it isn't a smart economic option.

Thanx for replying- and I don't think I've ever used a passive tone control in my life anyway :)
I started on passives & gravitated solely to actives for about 3-4 years. I've since come back around & only own 1 active bass (a Fender Jag Dlx that I'm selling because I don't like the tone). To me, there's nothing like a dimed out tone control on a passive tone bass for expression.

I believed its been discussed already, but has anyone tried putting flats on a thunderbird? I love roundwounds but with a pick they sound a bit too metalic for my tastes.

I do, I run flats on everything, sounds great to me, need to take some bass out of my amp cos it can get too boomy but I like it a lot.. But I don't play with a pick.
