Had some time at lunch again today, opened the amp a little more volume-wise:

Why fights: it keeps things "balanced". Same reason that pitchers in the National League don't throw at opposing batters very often. They're gonna get plunked if they do. Its why Sid the Kid doesn't just get killed every single game. Teams have enforcers so that nobody on the other team gets too froggy with the stars (or superstars, in Sid's case). Somebody takes a cheap shot at your top scorer, they're gonna have to pay a price for it. And, without letting them fight, the game would get out of control and the refs wouldn't be able to keep it in check.

This is sensible. I'll buy it.

That's quite the rack system - it must be pushing the limits of the spousal acceptance factor. Ours is a Rega house. Gave my RP3 turntable away a long time ago and then when the Apollo CD player died my audio bloke advised against replacing it. These days the front end is a Sonos flac streamer, then Rega DAC, pre, power and cables into standmount Tannoy dual concentrics (about which I admit I have something of an obsession). In a perfect world the connection beyween the NAS and streamer would be wired but the designers/builder of this flat put the wall ports too far apart.

Thankfully my wife is very tolerant of my ways, hifi and basses came before her so it was a bit of a package deal.

Rega is nice kit, I've never owned any though, I for some reason or other ended up with Naim amps and nothing much else other than Naim sounds anything like with them. You gave away an RP3? Now I know your daft I love vinyl as a medium and the RP3 is a class player, again I've never owned one but I've heard plenty, few decks can better it irrespective of price, don't know what it is but they can convey music in a completely engaging way. I just can't seem to be able to try streaming, it seems wrong to me, I guess I like the ritual of choosing a record and all the fuss of putting it on the deck etc, a dinosaur I think the term is!

The reason that records are coming back, other than the whole hipster silliness aspect, is the ritual. We'd buy an LP, unwrap it, put it on, and really dig into the art work and liner notes while we listened. With the downloading of songs, that's all taken away, and we yearn to have the connection with the music that uses to be there. There is a certain hollowness to the experience of there's no investment in it. Young people are finding out what we've known for 30 or 40 years.

I heard a recent local NPR station piece about cassette tapes now being embraced by millennial's. I especially like when they get old and start to stretch creating new versions of all those favorite 80's songs.

Agreed on most counts. There are plenty of people who could be given a signature model. And plenty of colors to do besides brown sunburst. Not that there's anything wrong with that finish, but options would be nice.


All those colors look pretty great to me.


Personally, I've tried Gibsons and Epiphones, and I like the necks on the neck-through Epiphones better.

If the two basses are made of the same woods (they are) and have the same pickups, then the only difference in sound would be due to slightly different electronics... which is an incredibly cheap mod.

I'm taking notes, Sartori. I'm guessing that you're talking capicators??? What "electronics" would you suggest upgrading to? I'd love to supe up the goth bird.

@ColinLP, I never got into Naim because of the £££. Rega has a certain sense of 'timing' I really like.

I was quite late to CDs but there was a point when I was only buying classical and you could only buy that on CD. Now there's an Aladdin's cave of flac downloads direct from the label and you don't have to wait weeks/months for your CD to arrive (once took over a year for complete set of Shostakovich string quartets to turn up). Obviously this was before the www/amazon.

There was a certain sense of regret at giving up LPs, but then again, your turntable in my flat would have a pair of cats sitting on it, swinging off the arm and chewing the cartridge, hooking a claw around the stylus/cantilever ... you get the picture. As for rituals, you can read the CD inlay while ripping the contents to flac format, then ensure the track details conform with your cataloguing system.

In the end it's all just a medium and the message is what's important ... oh and there's that whole 'hipster' thing as well.

Just reading yesterday's paper, they have a story on Keith Urban, the pic shows a big Thunderbird tattoo on his left inside arm, it shows when he is holding a guitar down low.

Surprised me. I assume it isn't a Gibson reference as I've only noticed him with a Strat, or more often Telecasters.

St Albert. He is retired so he and his wife migrate south after Christmas each year in a huge Silverado hitched with a huge 'trailer' and the Harley on the back.
