Thunderbird Club

They are cheap, builders grade and are a stop gap until being replaced by something nice. Unfortunately, I have not gotten around to shopping for lamps and I have questionable taste and need help.

I just googled and found there are several nice lighting stores in the greater Burlington metroplex, they can help you - I can give you an assist from a great distance of course.

I am familiar with a couple. Unfortunately, over the last two years of house arrest, several have closed.

My bigger issue is figuring our some home decorating and selecting lighting to complement.

Plumber says about $6000 to replace it. My home warranty will cover about $4500 of it but code updates and misc work will be out of pocket. Hey, at least I’m not in hot water for once.

My New to me 2012

Welcome to the club!
Beautiful Tbird you have there, and she might be a very very rare one indeed!

To the best of my knowledge Gibson only made the exposed pole, coil tapped, Babicz bridge bird for one year. That was 2015. However, Gibson has been known to dabble around with design ideas and prototypes before an official release. If in fact yours was made in 2012 it’s possibly a prototype, I’ve only ever seen one other 2015 prototype (a 2014 model). Or I suppose it’s possible Gibson fabricated the bass in 2012 but didn’t release it until 2015.

A 2015 Tbird will have the words “Made in the USA 2015 Model” stamped into the wood on the back of the headstock below the serial number. Yours should have this, but the serial number is the official build date. Case in point, I have a 2013 Anniversary Tbird but the serial number dates it to 2011 even though the stamp on the back clearly says 2013 model. I can only assume Gibson built the bass in 2011 but completed and released it as a 2013 model.

Ouch! Hate to hear that. You've got me nervous. I need to replace ours. It's acting up and I sure don't want it to burst in the finished basement.

From you later post, it sounds like you have the same setup as we do. Fortunately I like in KY so it won't cost anywhere near that. Sure do don't want to move back home?

I’m a Telecom guy, but I was working for an electrical contractor that did a fair bit of casino and high end residential work. I saw some pretty cool light fixtures and some cheesy ones. A very wealthy client doing a reno on his 14,000 sq ft house didn’t want to pay for a real chandelier for his foyer. He got the one his wife wanted copied in China - so it had clear plastic tubing instead of glass. It looked good from far….

People do a lot of stupid stuff. Sometimes the rich are the weirdest. The summer I spent working (as a teen) for a guy[1] who owned a pipeline construction company, a lawyer bought the last lot in their neighborhood. He had an architect look over the plans of every house there, contact people to find out how each house was finished, then made sure his was better than anyone else's. It was nuts. Back in the very early 70s, he had only dimmers (no light switches, somewhere around 50 of them), special bulbs in every light socket (all custom or at least uncommon fixtures), real suede wallpaper, a 40x50' ballroom with marble floors, pillars, and statuary imported from Italy, etc. Whatever, dude.

[1] My grandmother was his nanny. I got teh job because he found her looking at want ads and thought she was leaving. He was so relieved when he found out she was looking at jobs for me that he offered me a job (through her) as an apprentice mechanic on the spot. It paid $50 a week plus room and board - in his mansion. My only expenses were gas for my 80cc motorcycle (maybe $1/week because I rode it all I could) and lunch if I chose not to take something from home (once or twice a week). So I banked almost all of it. One of my favorite summers to this day.

I’m a Telecom guy, but I was working for an electrical contractor that did a fair bit of casino and high end residential work. I saw some pretty cool light fixtures and some cheesy ones. A very wealthy client doing a reno on his 14,000 sq ft house didn’t want to pay for a real chandelier for his foyer. He got the one his wife wanted copied in China - so it had clear plastic tubing instead of glass. It looked good from far…

When that microphone fixture came in to the shop, the mic shells were all in individual hard cases. So I took home 10 SM58 cases. They are handy for lots of other things.

Being in the "home improvement" related trades my whole adult life (retiring now) - I would "accept" (= free) light fixtures etc from job-sight renovations. I saved part of a light fixture that was a chrome base-plate with many glass (glass, not plastic) chop-stick like "icicles" that carried light through them hanging from holes in the circular chromed base. I just thought those glass "hangings" were so cool and didn't deserve to be discarded/trashed. About 25 or 30 of them. Not sure where they are now.. colour me an aesthetic appreciator of interesting "things".

Beautiful Tbird you have there, and she might be a very very rare one indeed!

To the best of my knowledge Gibson only made the exposed pole, coil tapped, Babicz bridge bird for one year. That was 2015. However, Gibson has been known to dabble around with design ideas and prototypes before an official release. If in fact yours was made in 2012 it’s possibly a prototype, I’ve only ever seen one other 2015 prototype (a 2014 model). Or I suppose it’s possible Gibson fabricated the bass in 2012 but didn’t release it until 2015.

A 2015 Tbird will have the words “Made in the USA 2015 Model” stamped into the wood on the back of the headstock below the serial number. Yours should have this, but the serial number is the official build date. Case in point, I have a 2013 Anniversary Tbird but the serial number dates it to 2011 even though the stamp on the back clearly says 2013 model. I can only assume Gibson built the bass in 2011 but completed and released it as a 2013 model.
