Thunderbird Club

[RedVee]

Never had a Gibson Thunderbird bass yet... maybe some day. But I did have some fun creating my own Nikki Sixx "White Bird" out of an Epiphone limited edition custom shop bass. Doing some cosmetic work along with a swap to EMG for better tone. I also made sure not to remove the neckplate and rear headstock stamp so nobody will think that I am trying to scam or create something that it isn't. Of course I also can't ever sell it as nobody would want this clone either. I just couldn't do this to a Gibson. Someday I will get a real TB and join the club but just wanted to share the fun I had when I made this bass years ago and still have it :

Hey CP owners, I'm curious to know what you've done to yours regarding tone/growl enhancements? As simple as strings, if so what do you recommend? I have a TC Spark at practice I can try on Wednesday, the Phat Phuk B I have at home didn't bring out much growl. Has anyone tried Probuckers or Chinabuckers?

EBCFs and raising the pickups worked wonders for mine, though I need to raise the pickups a bit more. I really love their tone so I don't want to change them.

I plan on trying to make it up as well, even if only for a day. The only hitch is we might be in the middle of a home sale at that time, if so I’ll need to stay here. However, if I can’t make it I might be able to hand off a couple of basses to someone that’s going up. Im thinking the BlingBird and my modded Goth would be the two I’d take, and possibly my GK 210 combo.

Bring an armed guard with the Bling Bird so we aren't tempted to fight over who takes it home! 8^P

Dude, you'd hardly be the only one here with a membership number based on non-Gibsons. I've only owned Epis so far.

Which reminds me...

We'll be in Sonoma, CA for a wedding on Apr 23 (Saturday). We'll then spend a few days in the SF area before heading up to Seattle for the next weekend, then on to the boonies outside Eagle River (near Anchorage) for a week. I'll be back in Seattle for (I think) two nights, May 9 & 10. Sharon will return later.

So... if anyone is up for a meal, coffee, whatever on one of those dates, so are we!

I can't say for sure whether I can make the July M/C rally, but we're committed to the trip above.

So I guess I don't know what I have and I'll take your educated word for it, it as you described above with no belly cut. It was advertised as a CP. The other for sale since yesterday is identical, and is described as a Classic IV. Color me clueless.

Some people have replaced the tone pot in their Epi bolt-necked Birds with a 7ender TBX tone control. It is supposed to add more clarity to the sound. I have an Epi and TBX that needs to be installed. Someday I will actually get it done and be able to speak first hand to the change in tone.

Sorry about that. The basic IV is still a good bass. It's all I played for a good while; I'm currently customizing it which is why it doesn't get played at the moment. How much did you pay, may I ask?

$375, 12 years old, flawless, still has the plastic and sticker on the pickguard, with a
Gator gig bag and nice cord. The latest for sale has a case, extra strings and picks, great shape and hard case. Went up for sale 1 hr after I got mine, sigh....

You still got a good deal - just not the one you were told you were getting.

What you got is the entry level Bird. My only real complaint was the lack of body relief back before I lost some weight. It would dig in after playing for an hour. The tuners are budget but mine are good enough. The pickups aren't great but still do a good job, especially with the low end, which is my happy place. The nut width also sets it apart - 1.73" whereas most of the other birds seem to be 1.5". Other differences? Bolt-on neck, front-mount jack.

The Classic Pro (CP) is very close to being a modern Gibson bass. Neck through, same pickups (or very close) as a modern Gibson (darker sounding than originals). Low end for days, decent mids and highs. Better tuners than the basic IV (at least my 2012 IV). Body has the comfy cuts similar to a Gibson. Jack on the side.

Both came only in two pickup versions, with three point bridge and VVT controls.

Gibson quietly discontinued both models around NAMM last year (or the year before? Some Covid year). They both just disappeared off Gibson's website during NAMM, and stock slowly petered out.

The only currently produced Epi Thunderbird is the "Original" series 60s Thunderbird; as far as I know it's a rebranded Vintage pro (VP). It's close to the original birds from the early 60s, plus a *mongo* headstock. Tune-o-matic style bridge plus stop tailpiece. Big fat tuners, pickups with a bit less low end than a CP but lots more mids and highs. It does the Angry Piano well (especially with the Rotosound RS-66s on it; get the extra long ones), but that's not all it does well.
