Thunderfunk 750 owners unite! round deuce

So just a very short initial impression review.

Took her to rehersal last night. As stated in previous posts here, the low end is entended verses the older versions (like my 550B). More girth for sure. But........at least at rehersal last night, it seemed as though the 750A had a little less mid clarity and punch compared to my 550B. Maybe it's just the extended lows masking this (because the mids were so in front with the 550), but that was my initial impression. Any other 550/420 owners experience this?

I'll reserve final judgement for the gigs coming up. I have 3 over the next week, so I'll get some good saddle time with her in different rooms (and one of them is outdoors @ a festival).

I did. I took the 750 to band practice once and with the volume nearly cranked, I was completely buried because the mids were nonexistent. I have a post earlier in this thread discussing this experience.

I'm not sure if heavy EQ tweaking could solve this, as I quickly sold the 750 and ran back lovingly to my 420 (which I almost always set flat with a slight nudge to the right on the Timbre knob).

Yes Nad, we are in total agreement here. I just hope that I didn't made a mistake as my 550B is already sold and in transit to it's new owner. I'll try and do some EQing with her to (hopefully) get some mid-clarity and deifinition back that my 550B had.

My 550B did NOT have the newer "gold chip" if that makes a difference. It had the older chip in her and I've actually read that some prefer the old chip vs the newer gold chip.

I don't know for certain, but my assumption is that the gold chip is what makes the big difference in tone between the amps. I only have experience with the 420 and 750 though, never played through a 550.

By itself, the 750 sounded better than the 420, with a lot of transparency and greater response to player dynamics. In a mix, which is what counts, the 420 blew it away. I play in a very loud rock band though, which obviously isn't everyone else's situation.

I finally got to play the 750 with the band last night, and it sounds great. To my ear it is has very strong mids, so I don't see how anyone would find it mid shy. I cut the mids, added some treble and enhance, and it was loud, clear and present in the mix with the volume at 3.5. And our drummer mics his set, even at rehearsals. ;)

My Schroeder 610L is a very efficient cab, so that helps of course.

Compared to my Eden WT-600 the 750 seems a lot punchier, with even more mids. So far I haven't been able to find the sparkling highs the Eden has, and I actually had to kick up the tweeter some to better match the Thunderfunk. All in all though, I'm VERY happy with this purchase so far. :bassist:

Of course, my T-bass has strong mids, and it all depends on your tone goals, but lack of mids I cannot hear.

I wonder if anyones done a 550b vs 750a shootout? I had the gold chip in my 550b before i got the 750a. Only thing i noticed was more low end. Im still getting used to setting the gain around 2.9 where as on my 550b it was around 5-6. Ive seen so many LMII threads id like to see a LMII vs 750a lol. Tried a LMII at the GC here, they finally got em, an was very unimpressed, although, it was running through MB cabs.

Yeah I dont think the MB heads sound good through the MB cabs at all.
Im not a fan of their heads either but many people really like them alot. I think if you tried them through another cab you may like it more.
However I am a fan of the GB shuttle for the lightweight stuff.
I will need to try a 750 one day..

I just did some foundation cracking test playing of my newly acquired AE410 + my Bag End D12D 212 cab with the 750a and I must say with the AE410 I am getting plenty of mids and some nice top end as well as a massive amount of bottom. I think I'll try this setup next time I play out side to see if all that bottom can sustain it self out in the open and I'll be using the AE410 for my upcoming club/bar gigs.

Quad, you'll have to check the 750 through the AE and see if you are still feeling a loss of mid range. I plugged in my Pedulla Hexabuzz and got plenty of growl. In fact, I'd have a hard time imagining needing more mid range stuff with most styles other than maybe doing like a late 90's pop punk thing with that Greenday super forward, brand new string, type sound.

As many have posted, do NOT judge the LMII if played only through MB cabs at GC. In my many A/B's of my TF550b and the LMII, the LMII holds up very, very well, and I can get the LMII to sound virtually identical to the TF550b with a little EQ (i.e., cutting the low end and upper treble of the LMII slightly, and dialing in a touch of low mids).

The cool thing about the LMII is you can also have that big low end and very sparkly, almost SWR type treble response if you want it.

That being said, my guess is the TF750 would spank it down low due to the extra power.

Hey Matt. The head itself is not mid-shy (compared to most heads), but it certainly is compared to the 550B. Again, it's probably due to the 750A having a less compressed (more open) than the 550B. In any case, I gigged the 750A and she sounded wonderful through my Epifani UL cab. I even let another bass player sit in for a couple of songs and got to hear the rig in the mix and it was SWEET (he played my F Bass). I'm now a happy camper! :hyper:

Man Quad, we have to get together with all our gear and have a Bass nerd day. With your F bass, the multiple Cirrus, my Alembic, my Pedula, the Epifani, Bag End, and Bergantino cabs, and enough Thunderfunk to do 1500 watts at 4ohms we could definitely get the cops to show up:smug:

Just thought I would add a little more praise for my new Thunderfunk 750a. I played a gig at Princeton University yesterday, and the band leader thought the gig was a fraternity house party. Turns out it was the fraternity BLOCK party!

Needless to say, the amount of PA he had brought was under powered for the situation and most importantly, no subs for an outside slamming party gig. The PA was 1 of the older Crest poweramps and a makie powered mixer for the monitors a pair of 15's, and a pair of 12's with tweeters, no crossover.

The point being, I did not get to run through the PA. So, I was using my Tfunk 750a and a single Bergantino 4X10 running at 4ohms and seriously you guys, that rig will put out a LOT of low end. I had the gain at about 3.5 and the volume up to around 5 and it was screaming! The best part about the whole thing was even at really high volumes, outside with no band shell, this setup sounded clean, big, and projected well!

With the drums going through the PA and my bass just going through my amp we managed to play a 3 hour gig, keep the Frat kids bumpin', and enjoy a gig that could have been a disaster. We even got invited back for the spring block party:smug:
