Thunderfunk 750 owners unite! round deuce

I own a TFB550B that Dave built for me last year. I'm loving this head. I have always been a vintage tube amp guy, but I'm selling all that, and only using this head. I do have one question. Does my 550B have the 750 board in it, and should I do the upgrade to more power?

OK, so I just ordered a TFB750-A. I can't wait to get it here. :bassist:

I think and hope it will team up quite nicely with my Schroeder 610L.

It will replace my Eden WT-600, which I have been very satisfied with, I just want quieter operation, hopefully tighter lows, more midrange control etc.

Ahhh, I love giving in to GAS attacks. :D

Can't remember if it's in this thread or another, but the reports for 2.67 and 2 ohm operation are not good (extreme heat). I don't think Dave even lists 2ohm capability in the spec's anymore.

If 2ohm operation is key, I would look into an amp (like some of the Genz and Mesa heads) that are actually designed to run at 2ohms.

I dont know about the 750 so I would not apply what i did with my 550 to your amp,, But I used to run my 550B almost all the time at 2.67 ohms and never had an issue at all... It was a piece of cake. I dont know, maybe im just very lucky. And i dont baby my gear, I use it.. Its a tool for me and thats all. I would not run it at 2 ohms though since that would be irresponsible.:eek::smug:
I dont think running that low imp. is recommended but like i said the 550 had no problems . Sure it would get hot, but it did at 4 ohms too, Thats what the chassis is for heatsink.. I figured that if the amp bloew up , i would have had it fixed...

Yup. I have posted about it here before.. I am a daredevil... DAve said the 550 should be able to do it, but that i wont get many more watts out of it if i did run her at 2.6 becasue the transformer was at its limit.. But it did sound fuller since i had 3 aggy gs112s going.
Like i said i have no idea how the 750 would do, but my 550B did it without a problem.. Yeah it did get hot but i dont think it was much hotter than when i ran it at 4 ohms..I loved the way the 550B sounded but it didnt have enough headroom for me.. I wish he had a 1000 watt version.

I don't get why people have such worries over "heat" issues with the thunderfunk amps. The chassis is the heatsink. Run any other regular style amp hard at the minimum rated ohmage for a few hours, then reach around and grab that heatsink. I'm willing to bet you burn the bejeezus out of your hand. Same deal here. Matter of fact, the chassis seems a lot cooler than most heatsinks. I've run my 550 (A) hard (outdoor gig in August, 105+ temp, in direct sunlight, into an EA cxl-112/nl-210 stack which while rated at 4 ohms, is actually a little lower) and while the 'funk got almost painfully hot to the touch, it never even whimpered. Sure cooler is better, but as long as it functions I could really care less.

As far as 2 ohm stability, Dave said the 750 is 2 ohm stable. He's also said that he tests his amp into a 2.67 ohm load for 24 hours straight and that the amp will get hot enough to boil water before damage occurs if I recall correctly.

OK, allow me to celebrate a little, it's NAD here!

Got to play thru the TFB750-A for the first time today, and initial impressions are excellent. Definitely in the same camp as Eden tone wise, but it seems less coloured.

Love the extended mid control, and the timbre knob seemed very handy.

It was loud as hell thru my Schroeder, but so was my WT-600. I've been very happy with the Eden, but growed tired of what to me was a bit too much colour. The Thunderfunk seems to be all the Eden was, and then some.

OK, I'm done for now. :D

Anyone know if there have been any changes to the 750-A since it officially came out. Dave has a (good) habit of making small upgrades/changes to the design before even making a model name change. Then what he seems to do is once he has made a bunch of these changes or makes one major upgrade, he will then change the model name (from A to B or from 420 to 550 or 750, etc).

So I just wanted to see if any changes had been made to the 750-A yet (however small) and hear what they are. The one I just bought is from Feb/March 08, so it's one of the early ones (serial# 1016).

Just got an answer back from Dave. He says there have been no changes since the first 750-A rolled out of his shop (cool)!
