Thunderfunk 750 owners unite! round deuce

The thing I like about a TF preamp is that Thunderfunk usually focuses on one model and they have been getting more powerful with each iteration pushing the price higher and higher. I don't need all the watts that the 750 pushes, but I like the tone of the Thunderfunk. So combining a TF preamp with what I need in power makes the package more affordable. If a TF 900 is released, that will definitely be over $2k since the 750 is $1899. When that first digit changes, it makes more people think before buying.

But Dave seems to be very busy making amps, so he know what he's doing. Unfortunately the TF-750 is overkill for my needs.

just being current with other brands, i would like to see an 1100 watt model... an honest to goodness real 1100 watts... no hype.. just headroom.....

hey that would be a good slogan... "No Hype, Just Headroom". mmmmmm you heard it here first.

How about 1250? ;)

Here's why I'd use one:
I have a 2400 watt qsc/plx power amp.
That, and a 1RU TFB preamp would be a light three space venue crusher.

The TFB preamp kicks it for both slab and DB. It can do pretty modern, and pretty old school.

I don't think a TFB 2400 is ever gonna happen;)
So, gimme that preamp; pretty please.
See, what I love about pre/power rigs is that I've always got enough available power, no matter what pre I'm using. I'd much rather have 2-4 preamps that I can rotate out with the same power amp than have the same number of heads, all with different power ratings.

I certainly couldn't fault Dave Funk for not making a preamp, since there's only one of him, and he seems to be doing fine with his current product line. I guess I'm just lamenting the growing realization that my TF750 isn't going to get a lot of time behind my pre/power rig, but I hate the thought of getting rid of it. :hmm:

The TF sounds great! One sweet sounding amp.. It does what it says its supposed to which is nice..
But the wattage issue was a concern for me... It was always behind the curve of what other companies are doing... I spoke with Dave two years ago and said to him that he needs to do a 1000 watt version to keep up with what is coning out and to be ahead of the curve.
But he felt the 750 would be fine.. but folks are still asking for a preamp to add to a larger poweramp for those larger gigs.

The 750 sounds great but it about as loud as a 600 watt mesa that i was trying out for a while... so i dont understand..

Over a year ago or more i did suggest to him to make his 6x10 with the slanted top two speakers which i see he did do...
And i suppose it is working great.. He was going to make a 6x10 and i said to him what will make yours different that the other 6x10s out there...
No, the slant is nothing new. Marshall did it 40 years ago.. but there was no bass gear except for ampeg doing that on there isovent cabs up to a couple of years ago.. and i guess he went with it.. that is great.. i may want to try one.

But the wattage thing needs to be updated for guys that want to play larger and louder gigs... 1000 or 1100 watts would be perfect.. but only if its a real rating and not a rating that sounds like someones 1100 watts, and is really 900 or so.. just my honest 2 cents.

My TFB750 with 6 or 8 tens running combined at 4 ohms can get brutally loud. Definitely louder than my DB750 and my GBE1200. This being said how much louder is 1000 watts opposed 750 watts related to audio perception. Double the wattage does not mean twice as loud. For me the times I need more it's a festival, light and sound company and we get good monitors and custom mixes for support. I do see the potential to add a power amp and cabs for those that need more. Myself, maybe a couple gigs per year, if that, in this economy. But I digress, back to my original question. How much louder is it to the average audience member and how much louder is it to you and I? My hope is that Dave will keep focused on building the best bass amp money can buy. I don't want to sacrifice anything for more power. Now if you want to talk 1500 watts I'm listening... eventually through a hearing aid. :D

Louder than a DB750?.. thats interesting....
but then how much louder is the TF750 over the TF550?
The Mesa M6 600 watts is as almost loud as the 750.. my Genz shuttle 6 is louder than the tf550... if my 550 was as what i needed i never would have sold mine..
I tend to prefer headroom... I only played with the 750 shortly... but my 550 squashed whenever i would lean on it... different strokes for different folks.. although the TF750 and 550 sound great and one of the fastest sounding amps that i have played..

make it 1500 watts then... all the better for headroom...

some folks dont need that. some do... I dont need 1500 watts.. but a real 1000 or a real 750 would be the bomb.... a real 1000 watts would help the folks that played the 550 and it would squash on them when they would get on it.. mine would go into that annoying compression..
There are some folks(not mentioning names)on this site that say their other brand amp with a 500 watt rating is all what the 550 is not... and thats too bad.... I LOVE the thunderfunk amp and for medium level gigs it is great.... but if you want to do a loud horn gig, or rock gig without monitor support i had problems keeping up.

Why are you guys thinking so small? Four figures of wattage...bah...that's child's play! You can't do a theater gig with any less than 20,000w! Yeah, maybe you'll only get to turn it up to just past completely off, but think of the headroom!

:p

Watts, shmatts, my Thunderfunk 420 was louder than the Thunderfunk 750 I owned for about 2 weeks. The 750 totally failed in keeping up with my loud rock band, something the 420 still does just fine.

Your shuttle is louder than your thunderfunk? I am respectfully skeptical of that after trying a shuttle and having extensive tfb experience.

First of all I have no issues with Genz Benz products at all. As a matter of fact I use a Shuttle with it's companion cab on occasion. It does sound good and I have and do recommend it to other players but from first hand experience on many occasions, the Shuttle does not get louder than the Thunderfunk 750. I have pushed it as well as the TF750 and it just does not come close to handling the volume level that the 750 handles.

And again this is not a knock on Genz Benz products.

i agree mostly.. i sat in on a gig last month with a single 15 and an old blackface fender bassman head.. it sounded awesome..maybe 50 watts on that amp i suppose.
but then i do some gigs in texas where the guitards will play a Fender super reverb cranked to get "Their tone man" ughhhh :rollno: and my GB1200 with an agggy 4x12 or a backline rental with a DB750 does what it can just to keep up .. if there is no house support.. the guitars are the evil ones that drag us along.:):)

i had my TF550B for while.. i loved that amp but it was getting crushed in the mix by the loud gigs i was doing...
I bought a Shuttle 6.0 when they came out last year for the fun of it...and i would up liking it alot.. so i brought it on a gig in texas along with the TF... well not only did the shuttle cover the gig without going into the Limit mode the way the 550 did wih the limit switch off... but it appeared to be louder in the mix and had a fuller bottom with the deep switch engaged.. i sold my TF the next day... although i loved the TF and it is one of the finest sounding amps that i have ever played... there were other products that were just as easy to use and equally as loud or louder that were smaller and lighter for any fly dates that i may have.. so we are talking about the 550 here and not the TF750..

If i said that the Shuttle 6 is louder than the TF750 earlier.. i retract and that was a typo/ error on my part.. i never did a comparison between the TF750 and a shuttle6... only a mesa M6 and the TF750
now the Mesa M6 was just as loud as the TF750 from what i remember.. its bee a few long weeks

+1.. and from a direct comparison the Shuttle 6.0 easily kept up with the TF550.. I had both heads at the gig on top of my aggy cabs . and between songs i simply swapped the speakon cable from one amp to the other.. without missing a beat.. sure there were some tonal differences and the tube in the Shuttle was noticeable... but my first reaction was I cant believe this little 4 pound amp has more lows and is as loud maybe slightly louder than the tf550..????

I will always defend the quality and tone of a thunderfunk because for me to say anything contrary would be lying.. the TF sounds amazing to me.... just not loud enough for a guy that needs more headroom in a large percentage of my gigs...

And i asked Dave 2 or more years ago to make at least a 1000 watt amp to keep up with upcoming trends in power... But Dave also makes a killer handmade product that is just about impossible to get these days. with the time and dedication he has towards his product and its advancement... but instead of doing a 750 he should have really gone for it and upped that anti without being so reluctant to do so .. IMO..

I think Chef is onto something and a TF pre would be great.. at TF pre with a Crest Ca6 would kill.. or even one of those new carvin lightweight DCM amps..

I found the same thing with my LMII versus the TF550b. It wasn't so much absolute volume, but volume with a full, open low end and no 'clamping' at the peaks (at least comparing 4ohm operation to 4ohm operation). I still own my TF550b (I still dig it), but the LMII/F1 are meaningfully louder, and have a more open, full, non-compressed low end and much more even, extended treble response. I have not A/B'd the Shuttle 6.0 to the TF550b, but it wouldn't surprise me if the 6.0 at least kept up with the TF550b also.
