Thunderfunk Amp club!

I'm struggling a little with my new-to-me TF550B.

I've been clipping in the input stage at much lower gain than I would expect. With my passive Skjold 5 string, I can't really get the gain higher than 9:30 or 10:00 before the tone seems to compress notably. This same bass does not cause any similar trouble with my other amps.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Passive no but active yes. But I am not sure if your pickups are relatively hot to begin with. In general 2 1/2 to 3 is when the limiter kicks in. The 550b is known to have the compress lower end . Which is its tradmark, When pushed the limiter starts to work and it has this sweetness to the lower end that makes the amp give that signature sound. Yes many amps you have to put the gain highr but not with the TF 550B. My 750A does not compress as much but I switch back and forth cause I like that sound to.
Kjung stated he can get the lm11 to sound similar to the thunderfunk. but if you boost the 40, 250 and 400 you can get a great DB 750 out of it.

Remember, the input gain control is there to take care of this. The absolute level on the knob means nothing, and varies greatly across amps. If you set it at 9 and it sounds good, you are good to go. I don't remember if that second 'line' input/output is padded or not. That might be an option if you want more travel in the gain control. Again, not sure if that is padded or not.

However, to your point, the gain on the TF550b is set pretty hot. As an example of how much variation there is across amp designs, with my moderately hot Sadowsky bass, the optimum 'just before clip light' settings on various amps are:

Thunderfunk: Between 9 and 10 o'clock
Markbass LMII/F1/F500: 11 o'clock
TecAmp Puma: 2 o'clock

Edit: Also, remember that the limiter is controlled by the gain control. If you have that limiter engaged and push the input, it will clamp down like nobody's business.

Well Ken, of course I realize that is what a gain knob is for...I've never run across one where 75% of the travel was unusable though, so it seems unusual.

On the other hand, the master volume control seems to be more linear than most (although not as much as an iAmp), so there is available output level up there in the noon to 1:00 range.

+1 A lot of variance in gain and master volume travel amount across brands. Relatively minor issue, since you would set a gain control once for your instrument and pretty much never touch it again on a solid state pre like the Thunderfunk.

I always kept mine set so that the limiter light would only come on at the hardest hits on my B string... so literally just an extreme 'safety' sort of limiting that seemed to work well, even though that resulted in the knob being below 10 o'clock.

I know what you mean about 'hearing with your eyes'. That TF750A is a beautiful piece of work. Looks and feels very high end and solid. Cool light on the fans, high quality pots, solid case, rubber feet and handles well placed, etc., etc. And, of course, it sounds great. If it was $999, I'd probably take the plunge again, since some of the stuff that resulted in my moving on from my TF550B (a bit too much compression down low when pushed) seems to have been dealt with nicely with the 750A (and I guess now with the 800B or whatever the next generation is called). Nice stuff if you have the scratch!

Yeah, and I'm in a position where I'm only hauling my rig a few times a week; easy trips too, so weight/size isn't a priority at this time. Tone is. I'm all about the feel as well. I recently acquired a vintage SWR Studio220 and am just loving it. ...and yeah, it's steep getting into a new TF when comparable heads seem to be closer to 13 to 14 Benjamins.

I LOVED the Cabbage case I used with my 550B also. GREAT 'in-between' case. Much more protection than a bag, much lighter than a full bore road case. Pricey, but really nice. Not sure if those are still available for the newer amps.

I need something to carry my 550B in. Looked up the Cabbage cases but they are too expensive for me. Does anyone have a bag that they use? Any ideas? (I emailed Dave about it a couple of times but he did not reply).

Said SWR came in a Gig Skins rack case that I've been quite impressed with. Looks great atop my carpeted Bergs because the wood insert is actually carpeted as well. ...besides being a well designed case.

I have a P bass (American Standard passive) that is VERY hot. There is a huge difference between it and my two Jazz basses as far as input gain settings. The P is much hotter than the last active bass I owned.

But once I dial each one in properly, it's good to go. It was weird at first but it brought to my attention just how hot that p bass was.

Here's my ThunderFunk-550 ...... I just had it updated to "B" spec's , as a side note, the switches were replaced with the little "bat handled" switches, which I happen to like better than the OEM switches, they seem much more robust ...IMHO

I've had my 750-A for about 3 months and it continues to impress me every time I use it. :bassist:The tone is sick and the power is impressive. I came from a Mesa M9 which I liked a lot, but my god the 750-A takes it to a whole new level. It doesn't matter if the room is small or large or if I use 2 cabs or 1, it's amazing what that amp will do...While your at it I'd like a number as well.:hyper:

Glad you got the update. Great amp. But what did you mean about the robust. can you explain?

does anyone have some experiance with THE TFB800-B2 CUSTOM BASS AMP. i plan on picking one up soon and would like some review, or player feedback. i play in a pretty loud band and am currently using SVT ProIV's with 8x10's...i am pretty sure i want this to be my next amp, can someone talk me out of it for good reasons

Nubs,
I don't think you will find anyone on this thread that will try to talk you out of purchasing the 800. You can basically apply whatever you read about the 750 and apply it to the 800. I have owned the 750 for a couple of years now as well as the 550B and couldn't be happier. Dave builds a solid unit.

I'm still gigging the same TH 550 that I got back in 2006.I have never kept an amp that long. It's an early 550 that is in a 420 case. Upgraded by Dave twice, and I can safely say that I have never considered another amp. It will never be sold.

TFunk 550 B entusiast here...
i couple it with two Berg AE210 and it sings.
Just sounds so old school, ancient, arcaic, with that heft in the midrange and the smoothness...well, it's MY amp. Period.
Usually I use a enhance from 8 to 10 o'clock, timbre 0, sometimes a little boost at 800 Hz and +2 dots boost on 2,5 or 4 Kz depending on bass and tone needed.
For recording purposes, sometimes I feel the need to scoop the low-midrange more while adding bass and treble, and I achieve so by setting the enhance knob to 11 or maybe 12 o'clock.
That's all, fantastic amp

And even more reasons (the above posts) to consider the Thunderfunk.

I too have the 750 and 550B. The only way I would get rid of the 550 is to replace it with another Thunderfunk (an 800).

The EQ and tone shaping options (enhance and timbre) are very effective. I haven't had a situation yet that I couldn't overcome with the EQ.

I don't think 21 pounds is unreasonable.
