Thunderfunk Amp club!

it's fine. With the limiter button off, you can use the gain knob till the max even if the red light flashes or even stays on. In fact, in this setting there is no limiting at all in the circuit and the red light can be ignored, the preamp will not distort (with reasonable input levels...). The input stage of the Tfunk is designed to accept high gain levels with its vaste dynamic reserve.
This is the way I understand this things and Mr. Funk, in the user manual (read it), says pretty much the same.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

For those of you that have been following my postings from the beginning I finally got to play my new TF-750 last night for the first time. Played a Christmas party in a fairly large room with a 4 piece band at a moderate volume.

I purchased the amp a few weeks ago sight and sound unheard. Here’s my impression…….(OMG I LOVE this AMP) This amp SMOKES everything I’ve ever played through and I’ve been playing professionally for about 25 years.

As many of you wrote about EQ settings I pretty much had everything set flat with just a slight bump in the mids. I set the Enhance control to around 4 and that was pretty much it. Was running through one Bergantino AE 4x10 playing my Victor Wooten Fodera bass. The amp produced great bottom, excellent mid punch, and crystal clear highs (great for slap)

TF users I would like to get some opinions about a few things. I was able to turn the input volume limiter knob up to around 2 before the red compression light comes on. (Limiter switch is off I don’t like the compressed sound of a limiter) I did notice I really had to crack the master volume up if I wanted the red limiter light to stay off to get the volume I needed. Later in the night I cranked the input volume to around 4 and the red limiter light just stayed on (Limiter still in the off position) I was able to turn down my master volume and the amp seemed to have way more headroom. I heard no distortion or clipping what so ever.

Just wondering if it’s OK to run the amp with the input volume at a level where the red limiter light stays on? Do any of you run your amp that way? I would imagine it’s ok as long as you don’t hear distortion or your speakers clipping but I’m not sure? I'm not sure if it makes the amp work harder either? Any opinions?

Also I noticed the bottom of the amp on the fan side got pretty hot after a 45 minute set. I guess it’s normal but I was a bit surprised. When I play a larger venue with this rock band I also play with I will be trying the TF with my 2 Berg 4x10 cabinets running at 2 ohms. Curious to see how that's gonna work out.

Sorry for such a lengthy post but just had to share my first TF experience….and it was GREAT!!! .

+ 1 on that multi-dimensional feel of the TF versus other heads, not necessarily speaking about micros or digital or class D (D, by the way, does not mean digital...). The Markbass Sa450 is not a micro by any means. I owned it (and a F500, LMII, aguilar AG 500...). Even my last purchase, the great (but micro) GB Streamliner, with its dynamics, lowend and absurd volume capabilities, does not compare with the "brown sound" of the TFunk, simply ancient and primitive to my ear, sexy.
Sits wondefully in any mix, does match with almost every cab on the market, and the DI, even post-Eq, sounds much much superior than any other head that I tested...
If money were not an issue for me, I would grab a 800, not for the little added volume, but for having a slight variation of a true classic.
Awesome, after many years I still find new ways of using it and tweaking its great EQ. Many tones inside a 7 Kg box...men...not heavy at all, ok?
I've got a bad back, but this obsession on super-uber- lighweight...
If this challenge will continue, you will end talking to your micro amp instead your smartphone...:D
Nothing against micro, of course, just kidding

As a LMII owner & long time fan of the TF, I'm switching from the LMII to the TF as soon as possible. There's just something about how the TF throws out a 3D image that the LM doesn't seem to do with...my ears. In fact, that's how I hear most of these mini heads. A buddy has a GB Shuttle & a GBE750. He hooked them up to Identical Neox 2x12" cabs and both of us noticed how much more 3D the 750 sounded.

I gigged with that setup for a long time and it remains the best amp/cab combo I've ever owned. The TFB-550B with DB212 I'm using at the moment is no slouch, mind you.

I bet it was!

I'm not gigging now. I'm really taking a break. But I'm currently playing/practicing through a 750 & 550B driving 3 GS112's. I love it!!!!! I need to get one more GS112 and my monster rig will be complete. I am using a Radial BigShot ABY to send the signal to both heads. The 750 drives two and the 550 drives one. I really don't need near that much power but it is fun, it is already setup in the music room and I like the tone. Plus I want to play both heads and not have them just sit around.

I have a Thunderfunk 550B and pair it with a monster green Aguilar dB112 and dB112NT. I would proudly display a number. You can see the gear in my profile and I can post a picture tomorrow! I love my Tfunk!!!!

I have 2 12DB's and I was using the 550B but i have been mostly using the 750A lately. Great sound. As of recent i roll off the tweeter on one cab so its very similar to a NT DB set up you are using.

I'm struggling a little with my new-to-me TF550B.

I've been clipping in the input stage at much lower gain than I would expect. With my passive Skjold 5 string, I can't really get the gain higher than 9:30 or 10:00 before the tone seems to compress notably. This same bass does not cause any similar trouble with my other amps.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Maybe a little more details. Is it just the lower B string that you experience this? Try everything in the mid 's eq section 12 oclock (flat). Treble and bass the same. Timbre 1 click to the left. Enhance around 3 or 4. Your bass being passive I am surprised. Active that sounds about right. With 550B anyway. Oh by the way you mentioned this in 2011. Have you conquered the problem if there was one?

I'd like to Know about Thunderfunk amps. I see a lot of players changing from Eden to Thunderfunk, even the person that turned me on to Eden is going Thunderfunk! Would someone give me a unbiased answer, please!

There so much information here that i am sure will answer your questions. I am not sure what you are asking. You want to know why someone would go from eden to thunderfunk or do you want a general info of the amp? It is interesting that I myself changed from eden to thunderfunk. One the parts Dave uses for his amp is top of the line and have not known anyone needing repairs. Not saying it has not happened just i myself have not heard of any. I have been using Thunderfunk for about 7 years. Its a rather old design. Originally designed by the people who went on to make the SWR. Eden and SWR have had a relationship in the past as eden use to make the Goliath cabs for them. Then SWR pulled away from eden and eden started making the David series. Can you see the relationship. David and Goliath. David took down Goliath. Not sure if they made the amps to but they made the David series amps. Which i had and unfortunately fell out of my truck on to the street without me knowing till I got home. When i went back it was rolled over by cars and trucks for about an hour. Now came the 550B which i still have and love as well as a 750A. Well anyway the original designers sold it to Gibson. Imagine that Gibson had a great amp and I guess were not to good at pushing it. Dave came in and took over. He saw the potential and added his own idea's and ears and created the Thunderfunk. Dave is a very intelligent guy but more so is his creativeness to understand HOW to create a sound that he would like to put his name on. A starting point to make an amp sound the way you want is to hear it flat. Then you take it from there. Well as most of us thunderfunk users, (other than the few) play the amp flat, we found that it is the sound we were searching for. It is also light enough, that it can be moved with little effort without going digital. Am I putting down digital. Not at all. But a Digital, transistor and tube amps were not designed to sound the same nor do they. Again not saying one is better than the next. Just saying the character of the sound will be different. With that I must say i really love the Thunderfunk. Never had a problem with it. Never shut down on me. I also dropped it pretty bad as I had broken my elbow and did a gig (with alot of pain) and could not properly transport my equipment. It fell twice. Brought it home and started it up. I was blessed that it worked perfectly and made the right choice when i purchased it.

Thank you for the info, I use a Eden 550b. I hear some say Thunderfunk is a better Eden. The way you described how most ppl set the EQ it almost sounds like you were talking about a Eden. What is the tone like with the Thunderfunk amps, is it anything like the Eden.

I had both and its so subjective to say one sounds similar.
Eden is a nice amp. They have a large fan base. I personally dont think they relate to much with each other but have some similar controls.
I won't say the Thunderfunk is a better eden as eden worked on there own amp and what they wanted. I know what you are seeking and you want to be sure you are making a right decision if you buy a Thunderfunk. No matter what anyone says you should try first before you buy. I know you can buy a thinderfunk from dave and return it after a certain period of time. Dave is a very understandable guy and if you wanted to return it he understands not many stores carry it and would accept that it did not meet your sound. Everybody has there own opinion. I will go out on a limb and say Thunderfunk is cleaner. Eden has a more open bottom end where the TF is tighter. The TF has a stronger mid range presence and is a strong point to the amp. You can probably go higher on the eden but the TF is strongest around the 4k area. Maybe someone here can add to it cause i hate doing comparisons as again its so subjective. You can mail Dave and he will give you a world of info on his amp.

Joebone - thanks for posting that link. I read the whole thing tonight.

At the risk of being an old grouch - it makes me pine for the TB of a few years back. I feel TB was more informative in the past.

I've been gigging a TFB-420 into a fearful for some time now. Lots of different tones on tap, loud, and very reliable. Couldn't imagine a better rig.
