Thunderfunk Amp club!

Hey all. Here are some clips of my band from last Friday. I am using my Thunderfunk 550B, Aguilar GS410 and Sadowsky UV70 with singles. Not to brag, but I absolutely LOVE my tone!!!!

Have you had anyone complain (sound guys) that the DI level on your head is too hot? I have had this happen at a few clubs and the dial is a "0". Yes, I am going pre-eq out as well. No biggie. Just curious.

Anyway, here are the clips

No complaints here. Why not try backing it off to around a third or so. If they want more, you can always goose it up. I've had it as high as about two o'clock before when it was needed.

That is just it. I have it set a "0" and they still say it is a really hot signal. I just find that odd. They say that it does not distort, I think they are just surprised that it is so hot. My only other thought would be that I use a pedal board and maybe my impedance levels are off causing a big increase in gain. Who knows?

Chris that Sad sounds bittersweetly firmilar.

What was I thinking:rollno:

Matt, your thinking rewarded me with the sweetest bass I have ever had the pleasure to play/hear. :smug: This thing with the TF and the Aggie cab is pure heaven. I cannot thank you enough.

Yeah I had one sound guy ask me about the DI output level early on. I adjusted it down to about the 2-3 range and have never been asked about it since...

Some shots of my stuff in the house and then out in the wild. Love my Thunderfunk and Aggy combo. Makes me wonder why I played anything else.

Not much. The original 550a had the 'switch' as a small 'baseball bat' switch, the 550b has it integrated into the board and front panel. The 550b lost the pre EQ line out and replaced it with a separate pre EQ DI (nice) and added a mute switch. Sometime into the 550b production run, Dave changed the design of the preamp chip, but most could not hear much, if any difference.

So, mainly, a couple features (including a pre EQ DI, which is nice to have), and a bit more 'integrated'.

I was so into these amps at one time that I had the 'original 550' (which was called the 420 EU), one of the first 550a' (that TBer Burk is gigging now) and then finally the 550b (which was worth the upgrade to me for the DI). The all sounded virtually identical and they held their value nicely, making the 'upgrading' pretty painless over the years.

The 550 is one of those rare amps that sounds wonderful virtually flat (NEVER touched that timbre control, and maybe just a touch of enhance every once in a while... that control is much more subtle and usable than most of those 'scoop' controls, and even then, never ran the enhance past 9 o'clock), and really sounded good with literally every cab I paired it with (Epifani, Bergantino, Aguilar, LDS, whatever). With some cabs, a touch of enhance and maybe one click on the bass control, and you had a very warm, even, punchy tone. VERY nice!!!!

I have not tried the current model... a little too much for what I need, and the reported voicing change would not be in the direction that would be good for me personally. I bet it kills though.

I'm gigging with the 550B and 2 DB112's that i got off of KJung...great guy, great gear.

:p

Chris - I really like your tone, especially on the MJ medley. More than makes up for that annoying tone your guitar player has dialed up... :p

And that Sadowsky almost distracts me from checking out your chick lead singer... :hiding:

I think Sadowsky and TFunk is a great pairing. I've got mine running with an Epifani UL410s2 and while that pairing has its virtue, it is a pretty polite cab and I've been thinking of dumping it - the Aggie you are using has that gutsy warmth to it I'm looking for.

I've been running my DI out at noon and never heard a peep from the sound guys...

Yeah, I am trying to find a tactful way to help our guitard player with his tone. He came from a straight up funk background in Atlanta, so that is where it comes from.

Thanks for the compliments on tone and the bass. And yes, half of my shows are spent with me staring at the female singer. She is a lot of fun!

Yeah, I get complaints every now and again. Right now am 3 with complaints and 3 without. So, who knows. It is probably the soundman that has the gain turned up too high as it is and the +/- 10db on the board turned off. That is my guess.

I'm using a TF 750 with a Berg AE410 and the slap tone sounds incredible so does everything else. Clear Clear Clear....It will produce exactly what your bass really sounds like. Just have to be careful with the tweeter level control on the Berg. I run it at about 10 o'clock other wise it sounds to bright. I run the TF pretty much flat. The cabinet sounds great and cuts through the mix (Big Time) In fact I like it so much I own two of them. Did I mention LOUD!

Hi, is anyone using the TF-550B with a Berg AE410, can you describe the slap tone please?

Very nice and warm and punchy. The slap tone is great, but more 'Larry Graham' than 'Marcus Miller'. Nothing wrong with that... very smooth and warm, and more 'upper mid bright and tight and punchy' versus 'deep and wide and treble sizzly'. That's mostly due to the head, which attenuates the deep low end and especially the upper treble a bit. Really nice combination if you are into a 'modern meets vintage' sort of tone goal.

That rig is always a big hit at our GTG's with the 'old school funk' guys. The AE adds a bit of upper mid aggressiveness and 'grind' to the very warm, smooth, clean tone of the TF550b. The HS410 is similarly punchy, but maintains a more clean, mellow voicing in the upper mids through the treble, and has a bit more low mid push to it.

I understand the 750 is a bit deeper down low, but never heard that head.

Thanks KJung! I see a Bergantino AE410 in the near future for my Thunderfunk.

It really is one of the better cabs IMO for the TF.... really nice 'yin and yang' going on with that combination... punchy and tight and warm, but a little bit of snarl coming out of the top end of the AE that the TF can use IMO. I think you will dig it if, again, you aren't looking for super modern 'boom and sizzle'.

I like the tone you are describing from the TF/Berg combo, the super modern boom and sizzle is great, but for most band situation it can be a little too much unless you doing Marcus Miller covers. I mostly play rock and pop now so the TF/Berg is right up my alley plus my LEJ 5 has plenty of sizzle when needed.

I too use my TF750 with a Berg AE410, and the combo is a thing of beauty. The Berg is just super punchy and aggressive, and the TF smooths it out a little bit and fills in some of the low end. The high end interaction is great too; sometimes the upper mids and highs on the Berg can be a bit much with other heads, but the fact that the TF does roll off the treble a bit helps tame it while maintaining the Berg's ability to cut through a mix.

From time to time my interest is piqued by other cabs and the occasional head, but I don't think I could ever stand to not have the pair in my arsenal.
