Thunderfunk Amp club!

can you give me any info on that sunn cab? model and year and opinion?

Not sure of the exact year, but definitely 90s/early 00s. It's basically a re-branded Fender cab, originally paired with the Sunn 300T/Fender Bassman 300.

As for opinion, I love it. Playing my bh420 through it sounds amazing, easily the best tone I've ever had in my 20 years of playing. Suprisingly light too - I have a Peavey 410 that's considerably heavier.

Tried the enhance dimed thing the other day at a rehearsal. Warwick Streamer lx 6 into thunderfunk into an EA nl-210. Sounded much "tubier" than I thought it would. It also had more mids than I had thought it would. It did however, have a mid scoop. I was asked to turn up a couple times so I turned the enhance off. Might try it tomorrow night on the job for a bit.

I need to spend even more time on TB

My twin 550-Bs...I just love these things.

I tried this also, but just at home. To my ears, anyway it lost too much definition and that special sweetness I love from this amp. Also a big loss of perceived volume at this setting. That said, I usually play with Enhance set around 4 and really liked the tone cranked up a bit more until around the 6-7 range with my onboard pre set either flat or with a slight boost only. Would love to try this on a gig...

I tried this setting on a gig tonight; I set and left it and it was...OK. I didn't have the usual "punch" i'm used to but this setting was very well suited for certain songs. Also, I could really dig in without any wild peaks but I missed a certain aggressiveness when I needed it. It's a setting I'll use again but more likely as a variation and not as my standard.
Anyway, as an experiment, it really showed me how versatile the Thunderfunk can be. I like this amp so much.

Pics...
(Obviously not with the setting we're discussing; just for club initiation purposes)

Hey guys, as a former member of the club, and still a big fan of these heads, if you have a chance to try the Aguilar DB112 x 2 stack with the 550a or b, it is just killer... warm, fat, deep, a bit old school, but still punchy. That's an amazing combination to my ear.

It sounds great with that head dead flat!

Just FYI!!!!!

I loved my 420 for years before selling it, and sometimes wish I hadn't. The 750 didn't do it for me though, too clean and wide. Someday when I have extra money sitting around doing nothing better than losing value, I'll pick up a 550. Then my indirect 3-way stretched-out-over-5-years comparison shall commence!

What's the diff between the 550 and 550B?

Not much. The original 550a had the 'switch' as a small 'baseball bat' switch, the 550b has it integrated into the board and front panel. The 550b lost the pre EQ line out and replaced it with a separate pre EQ DI (nice) and added a mute switch. Sometime into the 550b production run, Dave changed the design of the preamp chip, but most could not hear much, if any difference.

So, mainly, a couple features (including a pre EQ DI, which is nice to have), and a bit more 'integrated'.

I was so into these amps at one time that I had the 'original 550' (which was called the 420 EU), one of the first 550a' (that TBer Burk is gigging now) and then finally the 550b (which was worth the upgrade to me for the DI). The all sounded virtually identical and they held their value nicely, making the 'upgrading' pretty painless over the years.

The 550 is one of those rare amps that sounds wonderful virtually flat (NEVER touched that timbre control, and maybe just a touch of enhance every once in a while... that control is much more subtle and usable than most of those 'scoop' controls, and even then, never ran the enhance past 9 o'clock), and really sounded good with literally every cab I paired it with (Epifani, Bergantino, Aguilar, LDS, whatever). With some cabs, a touch of enhance and maybe one click on the bass control, and you had a very warm, even, punchy tone. VERY nice!!!!

I have not tried the current model... a little too much for what I need, and the reported voicing change would not be in the direction that would be good for me personally. I bet it kills though.

I have one of the early 550's with the "baseball bat switch",and I just sent it to Dave for repair and upgrades. It was in his shop 3 days, and it's ready and on it's way back home.He said it will be louder, and sound a lot better han before. Can't imagine it sounding better! So a big salute to Dave for top notch customer service!!!! :hyper:
