Thunderfunk arrives!

It's pretty cool... and pretty rare when something like this lives up to what might seem like hype. I've been talking it's predecessor up for years and it was cool to see them finally catch on years after they went out of production. They're all workhorses and IMO IME almost too easy to use... if that's possible. I've yet to be disappointed by these amps live.
Brad, I am so glad you did. I never would have heard of ThunderFunk amps were it not for your early posts. Looked at them for about a year before pulling the trigger...now I wonder what in the blue blazes I was waiting for! I still love my Alembic, but it's on definite backup duties to the TF these days. The more I play the TF, the better it sounds...regardless of what bass I plug into it (alright...I'm somewhat limited for brands in that department, ;) ). It truly is plug and play. I had been using the 'enhance' some, but will try it Brad's way next gig.
I love the reaction I get when I am asked about the TF...this sort of puzzled '*** is that?' look. Surprising, but it doesn't seem that a lot of folks outside of this community have heard of them. Been trying to change that, one bassist at a time...

I got to check out Kjung's Thunderfunk over the weekend and I was VERY impressed! The big thing that I noticed was the amount of raw power it had...it really reminded me of the way a nice pre/poweramp setup sounds. tons of headroom and a fullness/girth to the sound that is missing in alot of all in one heads. We A/B'd it with his WWU, and though the Walter sounded great, it didn't seem to have as much "depth" to the sound as the Thunderfunk.

I was also suprised at how light it is...I know its 15 lbs, but it is a very light 15 lbs, even in the rack case. It felt like the case was empty!

That is what I hear as well. It is a conservatively rated 500 watts, isn't it?

Do 550s come with some sort of case? I saw at their site that they have a flight case for $195, but that's too much... Is a simple travel bag available as extra (or in the standard price)?

No case provided. I prefer mine in a light SKB rack... plenty of protection and lot's of room for cables, extension cords, etc. in the back... and the SKB two space rack only adds a couple of pounds to the weight.

I did purchase the flight case and have my second 550 in that. That's the one that gets thrown in the truck when I travel. The flight case is very light and offers a lot of protection. The bad news is, there is virtually no room for cables, power cords, etc. They should have really designed it with a little bit of the padding taken out of the top to make room for the cables. You can cram them in there, but it's a hassle.

So it looks like Ken, Brad, Chef and Kim are all using Thunderfunks for your main amp?

I wonder if I can find one in Alaska to try out...

Yessir. I wouldn't trade mine for nuttin'.
Used to be if you bought direct from Dave at Thunderfunk you got a 7 day no questions asked trial period. Not sure if he still deos that...

Definitely my 'A' rig! Nothing has come close for me. The size and weight are nice, but that neither is nor was my concern. The TF has tone for days...without touching more than the gain, volume and timbre knobs. The TF's 500 watts are some of the biggest watts I have come across-regardless of venue, I have not needed all that it delivers. Add in the fact that the amp is very reasonably priced and Dave is such a nice guy to work with...it's kind of a no brainer. The basic design has been proven to be robust over the years...Dave has just made a good thing better...in large degree by simply using his ears and own experience as a bassist.
Can't say enough good things about ThunderFunks and the guy that makes them possible!

Well, I went and did it, I should be recieving a TFB550 from Dave in a week or two.

Right now it feels like an impulse buy but I have been very close to getting and auditioning the TFunk for a while now.

I'll be running my Sadowsky RV5 and Epifani 410UL or Bergantino HT112 pair.

I'm hoping that in a few weeks I'll be reporting back and thanking all of the previous posters on this thread for pushing me over the edge! We will see....
