TI JF344 Problem- tonally dead E string

Howdy folks,
I made the move from rotos to the lauded TI JF344 Jazz flats on my 4003 and I LOVE the tone on the ADG strings, but my E string is totally different. The ADGs are so bright and have great harmonic content as compared to the dull and undefined E string.

I did not recall having trouble with the E from the rotos, so that led me to believe it was an improperly cut nut or just a strange shape thing. What do you guys think is the problem? Is there any diagnostic procedure for determining if its a dead string or if its an improperly cut nut or something else?

This is a new to me 4003, and it was set up perfectly by a master tech so I have no doubt that the instrument is capable of proper (phenomenal) function but with the TIs it presently isn't.

Thank you!

Happened to me a couple of sets ago, E string sounded close dead compared to the others. Used to be you could contact TI and they'd send you a replacement if you sent them the dead one. Worth a try.
was the difference marked, like it was really dead? I'm concerned with the threshold of dead here (lol)- I don't want to have to call them up if it could be the fault of something else. Thanks for the post.

Well I have new set of the strings here... I could try popping on a new E string, but I would prefer not to waste the e on one as I can't find a way to buy them individually if it isn't a dead string. Can anyone else chime in on their experience with dead strings? Could it have been the way I wound it? Any tips? Thank you.

Make sure the slot on your nut isn't too big for the string. I had one bass that used to run a .110 gauge E string. When I put TI JF's on it, I too thought the e-string was dead. After closer inspection, I realized there was just too much play in the slot. I had a new nut installed, and no more problem with the suspect E string..... was just as lively as the others.

Don't sweat, just contact your seller. Mine called Connolly, the US distributor, and they sent me a new (A) string in 2 days! If you put the new one on and later determine it's the bass, you could offer to pay for the replacement? The dealer I bought mine from says it happens from time to time, that a defective string comes off the line. My replacement A matched the other 3 when it arrived.

Yes, as in no sustain at all compared to the usual liveliness I'm used to. I do have to say however that in 10 years of using JF344's I can count the number of times I've gotten a dead E on one hand. They will replace the string if you contact them.

I have lots of sustain, that is alive, but the tone is not bright like the other strings. There is no attack, it just seems muddy and lacking in the sweetness.
