The Prestia / Garibaldi one is always legendary. Evidently, Prestia's fretting technique came about as a suggestion or something along those lines from Garibaldi.
An underlooked rhythm section are the Seans, i.e. Sean Malone and Sean Reinert. Those two as a section are incredibly tight, as is displayed on the Gordian Knot albums.

1) rocco and david- still to THIS DAY, they play tighter than anything my ears have ever experienced!!!!! everytime i see them live, i feel like i go to this blissful galaxy of groovalistic funk which cannot be touched. MINDBLOWING.
2) paul jackson and mike clark- unbelievably tight! like rocco and david, you wouldn't be able to sit still if EVEN IF YOU TRIED!- there music is so tight and funky.
3) chancellor and carrey- they keep my faith in rock VERY MUCH ALIVE.
4) grainger and chambers- i could NEVER argue that combo! HOLY SHNIKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Bufford would sound like Bernard Purdie if you straightened out his beats in 4/4 time. That 6/4 groove in the middle of the opening track to Close to the Edge is simply primal. I loved how understated the drumming was in this band, made everything breath much more than the currently fashionable uber-wanking found in most prog IMHO.
Oh, and Paul Jackson is just a funky drum with pitches attached to Mike Clark's drums.

The Lee/Peart duo would be my choice as well. Really tight and complex.
Also, on a slightly unrelated note, is the 'Rude Awakening' DVD any good? I was thinking of picking it up, unless they have any DVDs closer to the Rust In Peace era.

Post #38 and no one by now mentions the James Brown band??? There's a reason why his stuff is the most sampled. Tighter than two stones in an Egyptian pyramid!
