Time for a new rig.

Good is in the ear of the beholder. I have owned a Pedulla run through an Eden setup. I still prefer an Ampeg sound. I have come full circle. My first amp was a Bassman 10 in 1972, I just sold an SVT because I need the instantaneous punch of SS as we have no drummer at the moment. How do you judge better? IMHO Jaco's tone was awful! I much prefer Geezer's! The supposed high end tones just sound sterile to me. They have no character. For soloing, that is fine, but for pocket playing, give me a loud aggressive P/J!

My suggestion:

Opt for the better bass rather than cab. Its been my experience that a great bass sounds damn good through most anything. Not so much the other way around - it only points out a lacking tone...

My experience has been exactly the opposite. A MIM Fender will sound great through a $1000 cab; a Warrior will sound like crap through a GK Backline. I do a fair number of fill-in gigs and I've played on lots of cabs and lots of basses... my old Modulus through a Carvin 4x10 sounded awful compared to my Korean-made $425 MTD Artist through my Schroeder 21012L. Also, you can upgrade lower-end basses over time (new pickups, new preamp, etc) if you find that you're lacking there. I would definitely recommend that you economize on the bass before you economize on the cab, if you have to choose one.

I would have to agree.........when I play my Lakland or Sadowsky through some cheap open mic stage rig they sound cheap - because of the amp!! However, I can take their cheap POS open mic bass and plug it in to my QSC-Demeter-Epifani rig and it sounds pretty damn good - it still plays like s**t - but it doesn't sound half bad.

I prefer new. I just have bad luck with anything used.

If you buy used stuff from the TB Classifieds, I can almost guarantee your luck will be good, especially if you buy from a seller with a decent amount of feedback. There's a comfort level that's just not there anyplace else.
